I dunno, but I think it's time to start this thread anew yet again. Seems like I've been discovering lots of el cheapo places to eat around Houston lately. Don't know if it's the economy or if I'm on a roll or what, but that's what's up. So....post your cheap eats places here. Two Rules: 1) No fast food chains allowed. Keep yer dang McNuggets and big-ass Gorditas outta here! Local places only. 2)Cheap equals five bucks or less. My latest and greatest is a place that has actually been around for several years but I just discovered it. I've been there three times in the last month. It's called Darband Shish Kabob on Hillcroft between Harwin and Westpark. Shish Kabob on a bed of rice with veggies and a drink for five bucks. You do not walk away hungry, and it's damn tasty. Post away, food sluts!
Phat Ky on Wilcrest and West Bellfort. Full plate of chinese cuisine for $2.99 - $4.99. General Tso's is particularly good.
I think you can get red beans and rice with sausage and all the bread you can eat at Treebeard's for around $5. Its just a little under $6 if you get iced tea.
Anybody been to one of the Taqueria Arandas locations? I go to the one on Gessner below Hwy 59 all the time. Mmmmmmmm....steak ranchero!
-La Mexicana (the a la cart menu) -El Rey on Washington (although they were recently featured on Marvin Zindler's Rat and Roach report) -Jenni's Noodle House -Antone's
59 Diner off of Shepard. They will be pretty close to your constraints, but their food is pretty good diner-type eats!
Thai Spice Express on Bellaire. $ 2.95 rice combination plate - good curry in mild, med. or hot plus 1 second choice from steam table. Icy treat ($ 1.50) also good. Thai ice tea also good. Noodle plates also inexpensive. Mai's used to be cheaper, but not so much anymore. Givral sandwich has moved into the Hoa Binh mall and you can still get banh mit sandwiches for $ 1.00 - 1.50. Cali sandwich also pretty good. There's a Tau Bay in there, too, for inexpensive Pho. The clothes store has some interesting club gear for cheap.
http://www.jnoodlehouse.com they got something like 7,5 and 3 dollar deals... my office mate RAVES about them and they are very veggie friendly (they serve meat also) I have yet to try them...
RockHead...thanks for the link. I'll check it out. Pasox2...I totally forgot about Givrals. That place makes good Vietnamese sandwiches. For pho, I like to go to Pho Saigon downtown. Ever been there? $4.75 for a huge bowl of beef pho.
Rules be damned! I've got three words for you: James... Coney... Island... (the sound you hear is me salivating 1200 miles away)
CHACHOS!!!!! They dont advertise so their food is cheap and has massive portions. Westheimer near Fountain View. So good. Beware of very toxic margaritas.
If you like cheap food, huge portions, but don't care about quality, there's always Kelley's Country cooking.
I know it's the wrong thread, but for the cheapest food in Austin, you gotta check out Juan in a Million. You order a 'Don Juan' (breakfast tacos with potato and bacon) and extra tortillas for less than 3 dollars, and it'll fill you up like nothing else
Is the Tamale House on Airport still open in Austin? They had great breakfast tacos for about $.75 each; excellent weekend A.M. hangover cure. Also, in complete disregard for RMT's criteria, you gotta check out Los Tonyos on Shepherd, Tony Vallone's new Tex-Mex place. 2 can eat there for under $25, excluding drinks (they're pretty expensive) & the food is very, very good. I'd recommend the fish tacos, enchiladas verdes & spinach enchiladas.
Shame on you for disregarding my criteria! I've heard Tonyos was good, but I'm not a big Vallone restaurant guy. I visit their restaurants, but they are never my first choice for anything, and to hell with the original Tony's...I'll never eat there again!
Agreed on Tony's, for the jack you'll spend there you can get MUCH better meals elsewhere (Cafe Annie, Rainbow Lodge, Beef & Bird, etc...), without all the b.s. pretentious snobbery. Didn't have a great experience at Vallone's either, but I've been impressed with Tonyos the 3 times I've been - haven't tried the fajitas yet, but if they're good I may never eat at Ninfa'a again.
The only Ninfas I go to is the one on Navigation. It's the only one worth going to anymore. Plus, during Astros season, they run a shuttle to Minute Maid Park. I've gotten in the habit of having dinner around 5:15 PM for a 7:00 PM game at Ninfas on Navigation, draining a couple of margaritas, and then hopping the shuttle to the ballpark. It's great!
dude, you've found the best food ever! i probably go to darband twice a week and i've been there twice a day on alot of occasions. one of my best-friends is iranian so he took me there probably 2 years ago and i got addicted. funny thing is i've never had anything but the number 6(kabob w' rice). great stuff.
