A Theory for Why Latvian Women are Beautiful

Recently a colleague returned from a trip to Latvia and remarked on how beautiful the women were. A discussion ensued at which it was agreed that women in a number of other countries were also very beautiful but markedly less outgoing than the Latvians. As you may recall, beautiful Latvian women like to parade their beauty. My colleague further informed us that the latter event was not unique, having witnessed something similar himself.

Is my colleague's observation a mere statement of prurient preference? Does this kind of thing belong in a family blog? Don't worry, at Marginal Revolution we never serve our prurience without a little theory.

Sociosexuality is a concept in social psychology that refers to how favorable people are to sex outside of commitment. It can be measured by answers to questions such as "I can imagine myself being comfortable and enjoying "casual" sex with different partners" (agree strongly to disagree strongly) or "Sex without love is ok," as well as with objective measures such as the number of sexual partners a person has had. A low score indicates subjects who favor monogamous, long-term, high-investment relationships. A high score indicates subjects more favorable to sex for pleasure's sake alone. with less regard to commitment. On average, males have higher sociosexuality scores than females but sociosexuality scores for females vary widely across countries.

Why might female sociosexuality scores vary? One hypothesis is that in cultures with low operational sex ratios (the number of marriageable men/number of marriageable women) female sociosexuality will be higher. The argument is that when the relative supply of males is low, competition for mates encourages females to shift towards the male ideal, i.e. when supply is scarce the demanders must pay more. (Note that this theory can also explain trends over time, e.g. Pedersen 1991).

Ok, where does this get us? Well in Sociosexuality from Argentina to Zimbabwe, Schmitt (2005) surveyed some 14,000 people on sociosexuality and he correlated female sociosexuality with the operational sex ratio. Here are the results:



Notice that Latvia has one of the highest rates of female sociosexuality in the 48 nations surveyed and the lowest sex ratio.

Thus, the theory is that Latvian women appeal more strongly to the male ideal because the number of marriageable men in Latvia is low relative to the number of women. Is it any wonder that my colleague found the Latvian women beautiful?

Sociosexuality study = slut meter?

 

I'm no fan of Chase but it would be cool to see him on Latvia's national team. Some years ago we gave out citizenship to a few Americans, but one (or both) of two things happened: 1) they sucked; 2) their motivation was more to get a European passport so that they could circumvent the FIBA rules on how many non-EU players a club can have.

Chase obviously doesn't suck enough to be out of the league soon and therefore has no need for a European passport, so his interest should be genuine.

As for the women... depends on what you look for I guess. Pretty faces are rare. Decent bodies (few fat women because we aren't exactly a wealthy nation) and promiscuity isn't.

 

Maybe so, but the Ladder Theory wouldn't agree. In Ladder Theory, the so-called "slut meter" is invariant, it is the Ladder Line that changes.

The Ladder Line defines the quality of partner you last had sex with. In Theory, it should only rise and never drop...as the goal in life is to climb the ladder. But lack of sex can change things...the more desperate you become for sex, the more likely the Ladder Line will drop.

So, what does the Ladder Line vs "slut meter" have to do with the Sociosexuality study. Well, the slut meter assumes the amount of times a woman will have sex varies with conditions. From consultation with the esteemed Ladder Theory Council, we find little proof of this. The conclusion is that the maximum exposure to being called a slut any one woman is willing to accept is embedded in her DNA and not subject to change from cultural forces.

In Ladder Theory, the Ladder Line explains the "slut meter" idea. A noticeable drop in the Ladder Line from desperation (lack of marriable men) makes it appear Latvian hotties are sluts, because they go further and further down the ladder for sex out of desperation, while you are watching from the Friend's Ladder...and now more willing to call them sluts.

Notice when their Ladder Line goes up in countries where more rich men are available, the disgruntled men on the Friends Ladder in the lower right of the graph call them "whores" not "sluts."

My folks are from Bangladesh. Ive been there a few times. Its a bit harder to get laid there then it is here in Australia.

 

So to sum up their theory... Latvian women are beautiful because.. they are relatively more okay with casual sex. Seems in general that at birth to 15yo there are more males, 15-64yo its about even and 64+ more women, men die sooner. Why look at national sex ratios then, when on the subject of casual sex/beauty you would probably not consider the 0-15 and 64+ categories? For the group 15-64 the ratio for Latvia is 95 rather than 85, seem pretty even. So I would yes it's more a slut meter and saying there are not enough good men is reaching lol. Actually, I think a more accurate measure would be to draw a line from bottom left to top right, with top right being a high measure of sociosexuality. I can vouch for NZ's spot. Hey bud, let's party!

 

Japan really should be in the upper echelon. there are hotels specially designed for casual sex everywhere from the inner cities all the way out to the burbs.
