This is info that got reported on a Philly fan board, credited to a local writer (I think) calling in to a radio station ... these were the specific names mentioned, and it adds up cap-wise -- and it deals players seen as expendable by each team -- so it may be legit ... ----------------------------------------------- Charlotte trades: Derrick Coleman $8,710,000 to Philadelphia TOTAL: $8,710,000 Golden State trades: Vonteego Cummings $810,000 to Philadelphia Golden State trades: Corie Blount $1,452,000 to Philadelphia TOTAL: $2,262,000 Philadelphia trades: Jerome Moiso $1,571,640 to Golden State Philadelphia trades: George Lynch $2,400,000 to Charlotte Philadelphia trades: Cedric Henderson $3,000,000 to Charlotte Philadelphia trades: Robert Traylor $2,793,505 to Charlotte TOTAL: $9,765,145 TRADE ACCEPTED Due to Charlotte, Golden State, and Philadelphia being over the cap, the 15% trade rule is invoked. Charlotte, Golden State, and Philadelphia had to be no more than 115% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Charlotte would also receive a trade exception of $516,495 with this trade. This would have to be used within one calendar year from the date of this trade. Golden State would also receive a trade exception of $690,360 with this trade. This would have to be used within one calendar year from the date of this trade. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You have been assigned Trade ID number 395070 How to use Trade ID: Go to http://www.realgm.com and enter the trade id into the box provided on the left menu bar, then press go.
Boredom. Based on minutes they're getting in preseason games, Blount and Cummings are destined for phantom injuries & a stint on the IR, and one could even be cut outright if GS decides to hang onto undrafted PG Dean Oliver. Both Blount & Cummings have guaranteed deals for this year, so maybe Garry "Let no asset go to waste" St. Jean would rather trade them than let one of them walk. (And it's possible that Cummings might have refused to go on the IR, which players have a right to do, if his agent found another team willing to pick him up after being waived.) Personally, I wouldn't make the deal -- I'd keep Cummings and waive Blount. But they don't always listen to me in the GS front office.
If Coleman is fit and reasonably mental stable and can fit his ego on the floor with Answer it is a great upgrade for the Sixers. From Charlotte's point of view they get a good back-up in Lynch who can play some 3 and 4 and really it gets them back to a rotation of Campbell and Brown and Magloire for the 4 &5 spots plus Lynch and those three worked real well together last season and it also saves any Chemistry issues Coleman and Silas have. as for Golden State, another gem
So for the GSW, it's Cummings and Blount for Moiso. IMHO, the Warriors get the worst of the deal and they already have big men competing for minutes (unless this is a prelude for a Foyle trade). I think if I were St. Jean, I'd hold out for a Sixers future first. The Sixers are an injury away from a pick in the Teens (maybe worse!). Look at their preseason without Iverson (& Snow).... and Deke's not getting any younger.
I would think there must be picks involved too to balance the deal. Philly looks like the winner to me. Charlotte looks like the biggest loser: they get a bunch of marginal guys. I also doon't know what GS gains; it is a big-man-heavy club already and they'd give up another guard for yet another big man? I'd think they'd tradea center for a guard, not the other way around.
FWIW, Juan, they'd be trading their lowest-ranking big man and a guard for a similarly marginal big man ... if for no other reason than to reduce the 16 bodies they have in camp now to 15 without eating a guaranteed contract. As I tried to point out during the Marc Jackson brouhaha, the Warriors' roster has a bigger logjam in the backcourt than among C/PFs: C - Dampier, Jackson, Foyle PF - Fortson, Murphy, Blount SF - Jamison, Mills, Porter SG - Hughes, Richardson, Arenas PG - Sura, Blaylock, Oliver, Cummings Blount (who's been journeyman IR fodder nearly all of his career) and Foyle can deal with few/no minutes better than any of the guards, who aside from Mookie are all still in somewhat formative stages where they need playing time to define/develop their game. Update: A Charlotte paper is suggesting that the GS will also give up Chris Porter in the deal, with Porter and Moiso going to the Hornets and Cedric Henderson (ugh) going to Oakland. I will be very grumpy if this turns out to be correct.
The Philadelphia Inquirer is now calling this a done deal, with Cedric Henderson and a future 76ers first-rounder going to the Warriors (which implies Porter to Charlotte). A partial explanation may be that Warriors asst. GM Gary Fitzsimmons is the guy who drafted Henderson in Cleveland four years ago. Unfortunately, Henderson's stats across the board have declined every year since his rookie season.
Pretty crappy trade all the way around. Philly might get better though if DC can keep his head on straight. GS gets a blah 1st rounder. pfft, stinky.
That trade is stupid for the 76ers and Warriors. Charlotte must be happy because they got rid of Coleman who did not fit that team at all.
You really think the Warriors were going to waive Cummings?? I don't think so. He is an average back up with room to grow.
Philly must be comfortable with Harpring at the 3 to pull off this deal. Also, the Sixers did need to improve their frontcourt prior to this deal, as well as add another guard to fill in for all the injured. Coleman is obviously a gamble. Blount will be a nice reserve. It's not a bad deal for Philly. As for Golden St, I thought their roster was getting fat...so perhaps this move makes sense. Does Charlotte have that much room on their roster?
Chris Porter is headed to Charlotte. http://news.excite.com/news/ap/011025/14/bkn-hornets-76ers-trade PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Charlotte Hornets traded forward Derrick Coleman to the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday in a three-team trade involving the Golden State Warriors. The Hornets get forwards George Lynch, Robert Traylor and Jerome Moiso from Philadelphia and forward Chris Porter from Golden State. The Warriors get forward Cedric Henderson and a conditional first-round draft pick in 2005 from Philadelphia, as well as cash from Charlotte. The Sixers also get guard Vonteego Cummings and forward Corie Blount from Golden State. Coleman, in his fourth season with Charlotte, did not practice with the Hornets on Thursday. The deal sends Coleman back to Philadelphia, where he spent three seasons before signing a five-year, $40 million deal with the Hornets in 1998. He has two years left on that deal and is still owed $19.1 million. The Hornets have been trying to unload him and his attitude for some time. But they had no takers, based on his horrendous season last year and heavy contract. He showed up at training camp last year 30 pounds overweight, never worked his way into shape because of problems with his irregular heartbeat and spent much of the season on the injured list. In 34 games last season, he averaged 8.1 points - less than half his 17.9 career average. He also shot 38 percent from the field and averaged 5.4 rebounds, both lows for his 12-year career. He also had a falling out with coach Paul Silas that has yet to be resolved. A former No. 1 overall pick, Coleman was scheduled to be the Hornets' sixth man, playing behind Elden Campbell and P.J. Brown. He had seemed unwilling to accept that role, saying the day training camp opened that "I ain't never been nothing but a starter." The Sixers, meanwhile, were desperate for scoring after a multitude of injuries. Allen Iverson, Eric Snow and Aaron McKie are all out. For the Warriors, the trade thins a crowded roster and practically assures that all three of their well-regarded rookies - Jason Richardson, Troy Murphy and Gilbert Arenas - will play important roles this season. Cummings flopped last year as Mookie Blaylock's backup, but he has one guaranteed year left on his contract. With Blaylock, Arenas and Larry Hughes, who's expected to play at the point this season, the Warriors didn't need another point guard. Cummings and Blount, a journeyman forward acquired from Phoenix last spring, both likely would have been cut before the season opener. Golden State's only significant loss is Porter, who had a surprisingly strong rookie season but was arrested in Alabama on drug possession charges in August. With the recent additions of Henderson and center Marc Jackson, the Warriors have just 14 players in camp.
I think Charlotte makes out like bandits in this. Clearing room makes sense, but I'm still not extremely sure why GS did this deal. In my opinion, they gave up a good player with potential (at least a super sub) in Porter. I hope Henderson's worth it. Since his contract expires after this year, GS does clear Cummings' salary of 1.5 mil. next year. I don't know if that helps anything though.
Looks like this might not be such a good deal at all for Charlotte in the long-term. http://www.hoopsavenue.com/nba/rumors.php After the Hornets traded forward Derrick Coleman to Philadelphia on Thursday, up-and-coming guard Baron Davis was one of many to come to DC's defense. "He's still going to have a good year, you watch and see," Davis said Friday. "I'm always in his corner. He's a good person, he treated everybody nice, he worked hard and I'm going to miss the dude." Davis' comments cannot be taken lightly. His contract expires after this season and it's appearing more and more unlikely that he'll re-sign with the Hornets. Not only is the DC situation a burden for Davis, but he also must be concerned about the franchise's future. The team is extremely likely to be playing in another city next year, with Louisville, St. Louis, and Norfolk appearing to be the most likely candidates. Davis has not made up his mind yet, but the Hornets are going to have to play well or their star will probably head elsewhere.
?? By this are you saying the two LA teams will have a lot of money this offseason? Oh my, a Brand, Davis, Odom, Miles, Olowokandi nucleus along with Maggette, Richardson, Dooling etc. would be lethal . All they'd need is Steve and they would have the first 4 picks of the highly talented 2000 draft.
