So, will he be back? 2008 6 wins - 6 losses - Weis 2007 3 wins - 9 losses - Weis 2006 10 wins - 3 losses - Weis 2005 9 wins - 3 losses - Weis 2004 6 wins - 6 losses - Willingham 2003 5 wins - 7 losses - Willingham 2002 10 wins - 3 losses - Willingham Soooo .. . .since the knock on Willingham was that he WON WITH THE PREVIOUS COACHES PLAYERs . .. does that apply to Wies now? - Rocket River Notre Dame AD evaluating Weis on a 'myriad of factors' SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said three weeks ago that he looked forward to Charlie Weis being football coach "for a long time." Weis That statement now seems like it was made a long time ago. Since then, the Irish (6-6) have: • Survived Navy nearly rallying from being 20 points down to come within a play of beating Notre Dame a second straight year. • Given up two fourth-quarter touchdowns to Syracuse to lose 24-23 to an Orange squad that finished with nine losses. • Lost 38-3 to USC on Saturday, the second most lopsided loss for the Irish in the 80-year rivalry. The most lopsided loss was last year's 38-0. That unpleasant run to finish the season is just one factor Swarbrick will have to consider in deciding whether to bring back Weis, who has seven years left on the 10-year contract he signed midway through his first season as Irish coach. Others blog ESPN.com's Graham Watson writes about college football's independents and non-BCS conference schools in her blog. • Blog network Swarbrick has repeatedly said he will look at a myriad of factors when evaluating Weis, including the team's graduation rate, grade-point average and other issues, such as recruiting and the relationship between players and coaches, which he termed as "great." According to statistics from the Department of Education and the NCAA, Notre Dame ranks high in graduation rates for football players. The federal government ranks Notre Dame sixth in the nation, graduating 79 percent of its football players, while the NCAA ranks it third, with a 93 percent graduation rate. The NCAA said the GSR is more accurate than the federal graduation rate because it includes athletes who transfer into a university and deletes those who transfer out. Notre Dame has tracked the football team's GPA since 1992. Before Weis arrived, the highest team GPA was 2.911. Since Weis arrived, the team's GPA has been 3.0 or above for six straight semesters. But Weis hasn't graded out nearly as well on the field. After going 3-9 last season, the Irish have lost 15 games the past two seasons, two more losses than the previous high in a two-year span. The loss to USC leaves Weis with a 28-21 record through four seasons. That's a winning percentage of .571, below the .583 of his two predecessors Willingham and Bob Davie. Weis did not hold his usual postgame news conference Sunday because he stayed on the West Coast to recruit. He's expected to return to South Bend on Thursday, a day before the team's annual football banquet, and is scheduled to meet with Swarbrick on Dec. 8. The two usually meet every Monday at 6 p.m., but this meeting could have added significance. When asked immediately after the game whether he had received any assurances about his job, Weis said he wasn't worried about that, saying he was going to continue working as the head coach until he's told not to. He said while he was disappointed in his team's play against USC, he wasn't disappointed in the effort, saying the Irish played with passion and emotion throughout. "That still not enough to win, but that's still the fact," he said. "It's the fourth quarter and these guys are still fighting their butts off. If you would have seen that not being the case, besides the production and the X's and O's, then you'd see there's a major problem." Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press
Are you making this a race thing? Like is this really white-black Willingham-Weis? Because I think they both are pretty ****ty coaches and I think Weis is gonna get fired
trying to argue that willingham was screwed sounds kind of hollow now after his terrible performance in washington. that said, i don't think he's coming back.
He'll be back. Notre Dame needs to wise up. They can't recruit in this day and age and expect to be what they were. Just not gonna happen. Weis is a genius, and showed what he could do when he had Quinn and brought up Smardjza (not looking up his real name sorry deal with it) from down on the depth chart. There is no better option out there. Not for Notre Dame.
I think he'll be back b/c in today's economy - not even the big money programs like Notre Dame can afford to pay off the $15-20 million buy-out to fire Weiss and then pay big money for a new head coach. I just don't think its economically feasible anymore.
Earlier this year, I concluded that Notre Dame will never contend with him as coach, so I want Weiss to come back. He is Gerry Faust II, who I wanted to coach there forever. http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-crowe24-2008nov24,0,13609.column If Weiss is fired, it's possible Notre Dame might hire someone who could make them good again.
Graduation and grades is cool and nice and all. 3.11 GPA is very comendable 3-11 is still want counts more and will get you fired. 3.6 GPA from Notre Dame will turn the players into millionaires in business. But come on, its about the school getting the millions for themselves from the players.
According to Forbes, Notre Dame is the most valuable NCAA football team in the nation. Dishing out the extra cash to try to revive that school would be well worth the money and really isn't all that much at all when compared to how much money they're making. With that said, it's obvious that Weis isn't the guy for the job. Weis had one good year and they were absolutely exposed that Sugar Bowl, he's been absolutely horrible ever since. It's time to get rid of him and try to get a big name. The should have tried for Saban last year.
yeah, they were treated exactly the same, if you don't include the ten year contract they gave charlie after only seven games with ty's players
it may not be about race but it was clear they were never comfortable with Willingham and they bent over backwards for wies who is by most accounts considered a very not likable person
Do you follow football recruiting? Notre Dame had the second best recruiting class last year and is currently ranked 10th for the 2009 season. Weiss is a terrible coach, but he sure can recruit - which means he's been losing with 4-5 star recruits. IMO, I think we fire him. There's been a lot of grumbling about it lately.. and after Syracuse, that might've put the nail in the coffin. We have a HUGE endowment, so paying $5mill for Charlie to go away is penny change. Right now the hot rumor everyone's secretly praying for is Urban Meyer- and before you laugh, read this: http://www.floridatoday.com/article/20081120/COLUMNISTS0306/811200343/1065/SPORTS IMO, one of the problems is Notre Dame's strict academic requirement. People that grew up ND fans seem to love it, thinking it somehow makes them better than other schools because academics come first. To me, they need to drop it and bring in more players. Lou Holtz quit because they wouldn't let him have Randy Moss- whoops. I have two years left here- I'll be praying for Urban.
I didn't realize they did so well last year. I mean Clausen (who I never liked but isn't bad) probably bumped that through the roof though I assume? I really liked what Weiss did his first year there. Its as though everyone has forgotten. And so thats why Holtz left? Always wondered.
no, I havent' forgotten, the dude can coach offense. but he had two star receivers on the college level, and brady quinn, and the running back is on the texans practice squad
One of those receivers Weiss practically made himself though. You also forgot a deadly set of tight ends (not helping my case). More importantly though the defense had some playmakers.
I really don't think Charlie's that good.. it's not exactly like the Patriots took a big hit with his departure. He came in with the loaded team.. but there's absolutely no excuse why we're this bad right now. The positive about Charlie is he can recruit like no other.. it's just not translating to wins on the field. Losing to Navy last year, almost losing to them this year, losing to Syracuse @home when you're 20 point favorites.. he needs to go.
andre ware was telling a story about how he lost terrel pryor, I don't know if pryor was serious about ND but from what I hear about his demeanor i can't imagine him being a good recruiter. when i think about guys like mack, meyer, stoops, those guys seem to be much more likable, even tressel, weis not so much
Yeah that's also another factor in why I think he's gone.. he's not very well-liked by the higher-ups around here. Please, God, bring us Meyer
It's hard for me to believe Weiss is a good recruiter. He exudes arrogance and jerkiness. Maybe he has a couple of guys on his staff that are A+ recruiters. Regarding Willingham, I don't think he was good at schmoozing and alumni never bonded with him. And that may be putting it lightly. To protect yourself, you have to play politics as a head coach and Willingham was very poor at that, so I've read. I don't think he has a great relationship with his players either. Hope they keep him.
actually, just watching the guy on television this is very believable. dude was uptight, he was not the right coach for that job. I just think he got a raw deal but he never fit in.
