Thought that this deserved its own thread (its currently being discussed in the Dan Patrick thread... and Dan Patrick couldn't hold Charlie's jock when it comes to sportsradio, so they shouldn't be associated).

So, basically he's not going to be on the air for the indeterminate future (according to Chance), and that likely means that he's either being courted by KBME, or some other station outside Houston...

Bottom line... Charlie is awesome... if he leaves Houston, this city will lose a sense of credibility as a knoweledgeable sports city... that's how crucial he is to Houston and sportsradio here.

OFFICIALLY, Charlie is one of Infinity's finest. He will not be on air for the indeterminate future.

    What's that on the wall?

 WTF? Some memorable quotes from CHARLIE PALILLO:
"The Astros are DONE. Put a fork on them..." - midway through 2004 season...

"I will never go join those other guys [from 610]" - 2002 or 2003, I can't recall, but right when Rich Lord left 740 and joined 610

Palillo is hands down my favorite 610 sports personality. His insight is far better than anyone else on that station, and I always feel like I take something away after listening to his show that I didn't know before. Too bad, I hope that he's at least staying in Houston.

I also remember him saying that about the Astros (who didn't), but Charlie actually said it with a caveat.... it was right before the 4 game set with the Cubs at Wrigley.

He said that if the Astros don't sweep, or at least take 3 out of 4, the season is basically finished. After they got blown out in the first game, he (like everybody else) said that the 'Stros season was basically done.

But after they took the next 3, he gave them a slight chance... and we all know what happened after that (12 game winning streak).

Meanwhile, Rich and Dalati refused to give the 'Stros even the slightest chance that Charlie was givin them... right up till the week before the season ended (Dalati especially).

As for not wanting to leave 740, I'm sure we've all had points in our life where we thought that everything was just fine and dandy... and we spoke as if it were so. Things change... and if Charlie is leaving... this proves it.

Charlie probably knows more about sports than anyone on the station. But with that said, he does come across as he wishes he was doing something else instead of the drivetime show.

On another note, I wouldn't mind another shake up in the line up at 610. Not just the hosts, get some better call screeners too. During some shows the calls are brutal. People whining about how hot Reliant is is the worst. But also, I wish Marc would actually answer some people's questions when they call instead of spinning them into something else. Like today when the guy called about not being able to bring cowbells in the stadium now. Of course I have seen plenty of them before. I took that as opposing teams must be complaining about the noise in the stadium and maybe the league has asked that noisemakers be banned. But instead, Marc was like, "This is not the Texans switchboard!" If a call gets past a screener, I would think you should atleast answer his question and not try to belittle him/her.

Not being in Houston anymore, I miss listening to Lord & Pallilo's shows. They were some of my favorites. Charlie seemed to know his stuff and wasn't just another guy sitting there talking sports. If he's leaving town, Houston's loss IMO.

Marc has become a little testy lately. He used to be a lot nicer.

    This plain sucks.

    He's a key reason I listen to 610.

I'd be testy too if I had to deal w/ people complaining about cowbells & the temp in Reliant...

He's the Steven A Smith on the show, but nicer and less yelling (and I meant it as a compliment).

Interesting. Pallilo started on KILT 9/1/99. Since such things are typically year-to-year, perhaps he has been working without a contract the past few months?

Honestly, that's the type of callers his show attract. The quality of caller depends a lot on the quality of the show. The morning show usually gets a lot of funny callers. The afternoon show gets a lot of informed callers. And Matt's show gets a lot of drunk callers. Marc's show gets a lot of boring callers. Hmmm.

Whether you like or dislike his style, the fact remains that Palillo is the single most knowledgable sportscaster in the Houston market. Bar none. He wasn't a shill or a homer and that's what I appreciated about him. His takes on sports are logical, cogent, and informed.

He is the reason I lock in to 610 every afternoon. Whenever he takes a day off and I tune in only to hear Lord and Dalati I usually end up listening to satellite radio all the way home.

I'm wondering if this other station that's about to pop made a play for him and in order to switch he has to satisfy a 'no-compete' clause by remaining off the air for a determinate length of time?

I sure as hell hope he stays in this market.
