Per PFT... POSTED 7:37 a.m. EDT, April 9, 2006 CASSERLY TO GET DUMPED AFTER THE DRAFT A league source tells us that the Houston Texans plan to fire G.M. Charley Casserly after the 2006 draft. Casserly has been the franchise's only general manager, joining the team more than two years before the Texans every played a game. The plans to part ways with Casserly, we hear, are common knowledge within the upper reaches of the organization. The move isn't all that surprising. Owner Bob McNair brought in former Broncos, Giants, and Falcons coach Dan Reeves as a consultant late in the 2005 season, and charged Reeves with the task of, among other things, evaluating the team's roster. Since that's usually the G.M.'s function, it wasn't a good sign for Casserly's long-term job security. And it's not unusual for a team to hold on to a football executive through the April draft in lieu of firing him at the end of the season. Casserly, in January, was privy to much of the team's free agency and draft strategies. He could have landed with another team and coughed up all sorts of sensitive information. Casserly has spent nearly 30 years in the NFL, including 23 with the Redskins. He reportedly is under consideration for a position in the league office. His contract with the Texans runs through June 2007.
Pro Football Talk is not reliable. They make stuff like this all the time. Consider them the hoopsworld of the NFL. But if this true, what they didn't fire him with Capers in January? Hopefully it is true but I am skeptical.
Makes no sense. Why would they fire him after the draft? Unless they're talking about him taking that other job, this is just another dumb internet rumor.
I have heard tha Casserly's role as far as personnel goes has been diminished greatly and Kubiak is making most of the decisions. So it he has another job lined up, I can see him staying around until the job opens up.
I agree, but I'm not sure why he deserves any favors from McNair. He should have been dropped along with Dom.
There is all sorts of sensitive information to which CC would have been privy. For instance, what was the bottom line the Texans expected for their first pick in the draft. If a team knew that information, they wouldn't overpay and would holdout for less than they might have been willing to give for it. It would be an imprudent decision to let CC go prior to the draft. It is just not good business. The guy in the article did a pretty good job of spelling it out. I have heard this rumor other places besides PFT. It is still rumor, however.
Update from PFT: POSTED 5:01 p.m. EDT; UPDATED 8:04 p.m. EDT, April 13, 2006 TEXANS DENY CASSERLY REPORT The Houston Texans deny our report from Sunday, April 9 that G.M. Charley Casserly will be fired after the upcoming draft. We received on Thursday afternoon an e-mail message from Texans V.P. of communications, Tony Wyllie, regarding the story. "After speaking with Mr. McNair," Wyllie wrote, "he wanted me to write to let you know that it was false." When contacted by phone, Wyllie elaborated: "Charley Casserley is under contract with the Houston Texans," Wyllie said. "At this point, no one is getting fired." "What about after the draft?" we asked. "After the draft, he will sit down with Mr. McNair and we'll discuss the situation." Though we appreciate that the team saw fit to contact us, the official comments raise more questions than they answer, in our opinion. In addressing Casserly's status, the Texans don't even come close to giving Casserly the dreaded vote of confidence that so many guys get not long before they are canned. It could the Texans are denying the report so that Casserly can resign -- and so that more than a few people will believe that it was actually a resignation. Regardless, there isn't much gray on this one. Either Casserly will be the G.M. of the team at the start of the 2006 season, or he won't. We've heard from a good source that, after the draft, it's over. So if he's still with the Texans when the Duke flies for the first time in Week One, we'll gladly acknowledge that our report was wr-wr-wr-wr-wrong. Won't be the first time. Won't be the last.
dont know if that would be the best thing for the texans...as much as CC sucks, he knows the team better than any other GM that would take his place. it would make more sense to finish the scouting. draft the players that we need, and then fire him... (if we do fire him i hope he doesnt know that he's gonna get fired or he'll do a half ass job during the draft)
