I have been thinking more of more of giving some time to a good cause and helping the less fortunate and then I read the chronicle this morning discussing Simmons giving up his jersey number to Green for charity.

What are some of the places you like to give back to? In the past, I would just have money donated to United Way or donate clothing and goods to the Salvation Army or other local places.

I have seen tremendous changes on the inside when I put other people before myself and I'd like to know if others have as well.

no question it's a good thing for you.

most of the stuff i do is through the little church i go to. we spend a lot of time serving a couple of low income apartment complexes in our area. it's not extemely organized, but it's extremely flexible to meet needs. we run a grocery shuttle for people who don't have transportation to get to the store. frequent cookouts in the park. there's the beginnings of a mentoring program through the school nearby developing. we paid for a bunch of kids to play little league baseball and coached the team...giving the kids a chance to be part of something they wouldn't otherwise be part of.

globally, virtually any of the big noteable world poverty campaigns are good. also, see invisible children link in my sig.

honestly, find something you're passionate about...a place where you can just go love people with something you're good at...or in a situation you care deeply about. maybe it ties into your vocation. maybe it simply ties into the fact you have a couple of extra hours on Saturday afternoons. whatever it is, do it with love. not out of duty.

    Second MadMax's comments.

There are a lot of needs out there so look around. Are you looking to mostly donate money or do some work? Do you mind helping to raise money or do you want to work directly with people? Do you have any particular skill or talent you would like to share or do you not mind hard labor? Ask yourself those questions and you will find something that works for you. For instance if you like playing basketball you can volunteer to coach at the Y or at an adaptive recreation program. If you don't mind swinging a hammer you can volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. If you're not up for anything physical you can volunteer to answer phones or do clerical work for the Red Cross or other groups.

Whatever you do though good for you for doing it. :D

    Definitely.

I donate money to several charities each year, most Jewish but some not. I also donate to a couple of political causes that are important to me.

I volunteer for Meals on Wheels several times a year, and (when I'm in town on Turkey Day) the Superfeast downtown.

Feeding the hungry is a great way to bring joy into the lives of those less fortunate than myself.

If you want to make an impact on children, I suggest the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.

You can really make a difference in a kid's life

The charity work that I do is mostly feeding homeless at the shelter. But the most fun that I've had doing charity work is easily Habitat for Humanity. Have fun in whatever you choose to do.

Max, the last Veronica Mars featured Invisible Children prominently in the plot of the episode and did a PSA for it afterwards. In fact, it looks like one of the main characters is going to go to Africa with the organization.

    It's a very good show.

I volunteered at an old folks home last week and it scared the crap out of me. A lot of them have dementia, so they would do some weird stuff. This one lady kept grabbing my nose. The supervisors had previously told me not to be negative with the residents, so this lady has my nose in a tight grip and I'm trying to think of a positive way to get her to let go. It really is like a different world in there. I'm definitely never going back. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I did it, but I think I'll stick to working with kids from here on out.

This summer will be my 19th year as a counselor at a week long overnight camp for children with special needs

Every other weekend I help at a crisis shelter for children from birth to age 6

On Wednesday nights thru the school year I am a small group leader for kids in difficult family situations.

Find something you love and let that lead you to where you can serve. The things I do aren't "work" because I love doing them.

When someone asked Mother Teresa how they could help her cause she told them to find someone no one else loves and love them. That's where it starts, find something you like doing then find a way to do that with people who need guidance/companionship/role models etc.....

Good call. I forgot about the hospitals.

I've done volunteer art project work with children at Methodist Hospital. It was wonderful.

Veronica Mars is a critically acclaimed American teen drama/mystery-neo-noir series that premiered on UPN on September 22, 2004, airing its first two seasons on the network before moving to The CW Television Network on October 3, 2006, with the last two episodes to air on May 22, 2007. The show stars Kristen Bell as the title character: a student, progressing from high school to college during the series, who moonlights as a private investigator under the wing of her detective father. Said to be "a little bit Buffy and a little bit Bogart",[1] the show balances murder mystery, high school and college drama, and social commentary with sarcasm and offbeat humor.

it's all about how you feel like you can best contribute. I volunteer at the local fire dept as an EMT on the ambulance. but the FD does much more for the community that we're involved in
