I've got a regular doctors appt. this afternoon and I was thinking about asking for a prescription for Chantix to help quit smoking.

I've smoked for over 15 years now, around a pack a day, but only heavy at night with some beers. I guess my question would be for all ex smokers here- should I try cold turkey first, or go straight to the new pill?

I'm completely ready to quit. I hate the smell which is why I've never smoked in my car or the house. I hate the feeling after a smoke, I'm embarrassed to be seen smoking in the general public, etc. Just sick of it all. Smoking, along with excessive party favors known as Red Stripes have also caused major gastritis in the tummy. Gastritis is not fun, therefore the cravings will have to deal with only 2 a night from here on out and hopefully zero smokes.

I've read up on Chantix, but the numerous side effects are kind of scary. Anyone have any recommendations for quiting cold turkey? What do I have to look forward too, both good and bad? Also, anyone know or have first hand experience with Chantix?

Needing a lot of wishes of Godspeed over here. I'm losing all my vices and I fear boredom.

I started smoking at age 13....in 1974. Cigs were fiddy cent a pack back then.

Tried quitting many times over the past 33 years to no avail.

Quit cold turkey on November 22nd, 2006. Haven't had a cig since.

Cold turkey is the only way to go. Any other method (patch, pills) is a crutch.

Of course....falling in love with a woman that hates cigs kind of helps too! :D

I smoked for 6 years and when I was ready to quit cold turkey I read this book:

Alan Carr - Easy Way to Stop Smoking. You can download it via torrents, or email me through the board and I can send it to you.

    Good book.

It has a 5 star rating on Amazon with 307 reviews

Dude, don't feed the pharmaceutical conglomerate machine just to quit smoking. Just toss the cigs, go down to Sam's or Costco, and get a huge case of gum...

the gum does help take the edge off for the first few days, which is when its the worst. After a little while its mental and you can stop the gum as well (although keeping some around for drinking helps). Working out helps as well...if you get the craving just go run or do whatever

I'll second the allen carr book. Highly recommend it.

After 72 hours Your entire body will test 100% nicotine-free and over 90% of all nicotine metabolites will now have passed from your body via your urine. You can also expect the symptoms of chemical withdrawal to have peaked in intensity. Your bronchial tubes are beginning to relax thus making it easier to breathe. Your lung capacity has also started to increase.

I quit cold turkey a little over a year ago (July 2) after smoking at least a pack a day. Its nice being done with those things.

not that I have had any cigarettes in my life(I'm 16), but my feeling is that quitting cold turkey would be the only way to go. If you are mentally strong enough and really wanted to quit, you will prevail.

problem with cold turkey is that you have those moments when you are just super irritated. it can be frustrating...those who quit know what i mean. no harm in popping in some gum and getting along with your day. just dont replace smoking with gum. Use it as a relief when you get a very bad craving.

true, but you are still addicted to nicotine if you just pop in a piece of the gum or a patch. You're just delaying the inevitable, The ultimate goal is to get over the nicotine addiction.

Try quittin cold turkey first. What can it hurt?
I'd smoked for many years, quit cold turkey and stayed off it for 4, 5 years now.

It's mostly mental. When you first quit, there will be time that you have the urge to pick one up. Don't. Sometimes you say to yourself, maybe just one more and I'll quit. Don't. Do not pick up that first cigarette. I failed in the past because I picked up that 1st one. After you pick up the 1st one, it's easy to light up another and another.

Fight it. It will pass, sometimes in minutes, sometimes it takes longer to forget it, but it will pass. After a few days, a week, it'll get easier. After a month, you won't even think about it. Good luck. You'll be glad when you quit. I am now in better shape than I ever was.

Ok i just quit smoking cold turkey on June 13 2007 after heavily smoking for 6yrs...so in about 3days i will have gone a whole month!! Im not going to lie to you its been pretty hard but its all about keeping your mind off of cigz. Also the first 3 days were pretty hard but the cravings and fiend lightened up for a few days and then came back hard (mainly b/c your mind is telling you tht you are capable of quitting so why quit cigz now, why not just quit later etc etc etc)

After that second stage of hardcore cravings and fiends it starts to get easier, but im not gonna lie to you after almost a month I still crave about every other day for atleast 10mins (usually after i eat) and lately my cravings are starting to get worse but you dont understand how good it feels not to smoke...I feel soo much more healthier.

p.s. I agree w/ rocketman tex that falling in love w/ a woman who hates cigz kinda helps!!! :D

ive never been addicted to ciggarets but always wonder why it is so hard to quit. what do you think would be harder to do...quit smoking or quit having sex (with yourself and with anyone else).

    Is this a good comparison?

Similar situation here; smoked a pack a day for 18-20 years and quit cold turkey last October 10th. Used Orbitz sugar free gum as my crutch. Haven't had a single relapse.

Wow, much appreciated! I sent you an email. :)

Great site. I spent over 2 hours reading all I could and it pretty much not only grossed me out as to what I've been inhaling, but it got me pretty amped about quiting. Not looking forward to the next 72 hours though.

I just had my first dinner without a cig and damn, it really sucked. It feels as if my food won't digest right without smoking immediately afterwards. Even leaving the doctors office, I was grabbing for a smoke. Old habbits and whatsuch. I can't wait to rid myself of all this BS.

Anything else you guys/girls recommend, I'm all ears! Thanks!!

A couple people at my hospital have used Chantix, and they all rave about it.

    ALL of them were successful.
