i dont know about you guys, but i wanted to watch NBA weakest link at halftime. once again, it was interrupted by the most POINTLESS news reporting. i know this is a big event, and if the reporting was of any use, i wouldn't care. but all they're doing is showing POINTLESS FOOTAGE of flooded areas..... oh yea, and an occasional "the floods ARE receding." no crap, you friggin idiots. ------------------

I understand how you feel, but, chances are, these finals effect and interest maybe a few thousand people in and around Houston. However, the flooding likely effects and interests tens if not hundreds of thousands. As much of a basketball fan as I am, I would've made the same call if I were the news director at 2. ------------------ The internet is about the free exchange and sale of other people's ideas. - Futurama
i completely agree with you jeff. however, correct me if im wrong, but i didnt really hear anything that would be useful to the public. i totally understand that this is way more important than basketball, but ALL they did was shoot footage of flooded areas, which they have been doing the past week, some of these clips which i have seen earlier in the day. ------------------ [This message has been edited by RocketKid (edited June 10, 2001).]
Well, I think they would've taken a lot of criticism had they NOT given reports of something at halftime. They also did report on some people who were still looking for their friends and family and they scrolled that at the bottom during the game as well. Channel 2 isn't exactly a bastion of great journalistic integrity anyway. ------------------ The internet is about the free exchange and sale of other people's ideas. - Futurama
Yea I feel 11 and 13 is more professional...Just think Jeff, if you lived your prior idea of journalism, it could have been you out playing in the rain all day asking people stupid questions. ------------------ Rarely is the question asked: Guns kill squirrels than REDRUM to fools across the nation?
At least the game was not pre-empted like GAME 7 STANLEY CUP FINALS was on Channel 13 Saturday. I don't really care about hockey, but I imagine if the NBA FINALS were pre-empted by Channel 2 there would be some kinda uprising. I would have enjoyed watching Celebrity Weakest Link, but I understand what Channel 2 had to do. Halftime is not as important as the game...Channel 2 felt like even though 4 other stations are running coverage of the flood, their channel could make a difference by broadcasting the same news I wish I was in Austin. I'm chuckling at the fact that people are complaining about the reporting of one of the greatest disasters to hit Houston being useless reporting and it caused them to miss "Celebrity Weakest Link". Fine if you believe that the reporting was useless and it didn't offer much info outside of what you already knew... but to counter it with "I had to miss Celebrity Weakest Link"? By the way, if people hear "flood waters are receding", it has a great psychological effect on several who are wondering "when will this end?" Take it from somebody that's been through several hurricanes and tropical storms. There's nothing like sitting around not knowing what the hell is going on or when the hell it will stop. Get your priorities straight people. They could've turned Channel 2 into a 24-hour Flood Watch station and canceled the entire Finals coverage for all I care; I think the flood is far more important. ------------------ "Light travels faster than sound, so some people appear to be bright until you hear them speak." -- Brian Williams (now Bison Dele) commenting on Isiah Thomas.
I understand both sides, but isn't that why we have local stations? If I really thought Channel 2 did it for the concern of the citizens other than for better ratings, I would understand. If I was really concerned about the flooding, I surely wouldn't be tuned into channel 2 at the time! ------------------ "Bada Bing!"
If channel 2, 11 or 13 would've continued to play advertising or stopped broadcasting between midnight and 4am during the flood, I would call them ratings hawk, but the fact is they did not. They stayed on all night and all day and did not show one commercial until the rain began to stop and they were able to resume semi-normal programming. I give them all a LOT of credit for this one and I am usually their harshest critic. ------------------ The internet is about the free exchange and sale of other people's ideas. - Futurama
The majority of the Rocket-Knick finals game back in 94 was preempted across the nation for the infamous slow speed OJ bronco chase. ------------------
Wasn't some of game 2 of the finals not shown.. ? i recall seeing weather on channel 2 during the game.. i'm speaking of friday's game ------------------ Shane "Save Our Rockets" "Life without basketball in Houston........without an arena that is what it will be" [This message has been edited by Rocket Fan (edited June 12, 2001).]
Channel 2 isn't exactly a bastion of great journalistic integrity anyway. You say that now, but just wait til something of national importance-- say, a cure for cancer or a treaty for lasting peace in the Middle East-- happens in a strip bar. Then we'll see which channel gets the scoop first.
