President Barack Obama has nominated Republican Sen. Judd Gregg to be Commerce secretary.

Obama announced the nomination at the White House.

If confirmed, Gregg would be the third Republican in the Democrat's Cabinet, joining Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

It was the last open spot in the senior ranks of the Obama administration.

I have a hard time believing this has nothing to do with freeing up his Senate seat for a Democrat to obtain a super majority. You can find any article that says something counter, but at the heart this is Chicago politics.

Edit: I didn't read the link before posting.

I guess it could still be in response to the getting no Republican backing. An olive branch?

You could have clicked the link I provided and seen for yourself.

Or you could have watched the video and you would have seen Gregg thank the Governor of NH for their agreement to replace him with a Republican.

a republican is most likely going to be announced as the replacement.

I'm in the library so I can't. Just going off of what I heard on NPR over the weekend. Will have to investigate more on this "Bonnie". I'm just skeptical, that's all. Republican in name doesn't mean much (not saying she is, just bringing up the chance that she is).

Considering that Gregg's acceptance was conditional upon that NOT happening, that negotiations about this were public knowledge as of yesterday or even before, and that this is noted in the link provided...this is a basso-esque triple-Whiff

Do you want a cookie? Seriously, I don't know anything about Bonnie, she could be a Conservative Republican or not. I was just going off of what I heard on NPR.

There was an agreement in place already that a Republican would be appointed to fill the vacancy.

But even if that weren't the case the GOP could ask their senator not to accept the nomination. Gregg himself could have declined if he believed having more GOP in the senate was that important.

Either way it was agreed to beforehand that Gregg's appointment would be a Republican so it wouldn't make sense to appoint someone to free up a seat that was going to stay Republican.

Why does she need to a conservative Republican? Gregg isn't one.

This is a great situation for the Dems. A RINO will get appointed and they avoid responsibility for having 60 seats in the Senate. In 2010, it will be very easy to flip this seat with Gregg out of the way.

I'm not claiming this is why Obama selected him, but it sure is a political masterstroke.

Is it better to be a commerce secretary vs a senator? Why all the senators want to be appointed to various cabinet positions?

Major, how do you figure that? Gregg is indeed a conservative Republican. He might not be a conservative Republican in the mold of Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma ("God, gays, and guns!"), but Gregg did vote against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which all four female GOP senators voted for. In my opinion, Gregg should go suck eggs. I sure don't want him as my Commerce Secretary. Not sure what Obama is thinking, but I don't like this cabinet selection at all. Heaven forbid that we should have a Commerce Secretary in a Democratic administration who believes in equal pay for women, or anyone else.
