I don't know if this has been posted before, and I honestly didn't know which forum to post this on...So please lock up or move if you wish. But what are the chances of making it to a Pro League overseas that would pay at least decent. Maybe a league in the Middle East, or like Brazil or something? Just wondering.
In what? Basketball? Some things to consider: some of the Euro leagues are every bit as competitive and have players every bit as talented as in the NBA, so you have to be really, really good. Also, height still matters. A friend of my wife went to play in Australia for a year or two, but he was 6'9" and he still washed out pretty quickly. He played DII college in the states and started. He attended a couple of NBA camps before getting a chance to go play overseas. He figured out pretty quickly that the level of play is pretty high, even in Australia.
for whom are you asking this question? if you didn't play college basketball and most likely division 1, you have no chance.
absolutely. my friend had a decent career at d-1 schools (transferred after sophomore year) and played for about five years overseas, but never too long in the same team/league. he played in hungary, kosovo, china, among other places.
Hmmm... I seem to want to add to this... those players that DIDN'T play in college and were THAT GOOD are already in the NBA, aren't they?
One of my buddies is playing basketball overseas in Isreal right now. He also has to serve in their army for being a citizen, thats pretty crazy
i have a buddy that just signed with a couple other buddies with the miami heat as a FA. and he could barely even make it overseas. so that tells you something. give it up, you have no chance.
I've known 4 guys who played pro basketball overseas, all of whom played for Lamar at least one year: Alan Daniels was the best player in the Southland his Senior year. He scored 41 against Memphis with Chris Douglas-Roberts in his face the whole game. He's the best basketball player I've ever really known personally. He was talked to by several NBA teams before the draft, and was brought into a couple of camps. He has played 3 years in Italy and Poland as a starter or 6th Man on various just-below-Euroleague teams. He's currently a free agent and looking for another team. He's made 6-figures every year. Another player was a really athletic 6'8" PF with a 40-inch vertical. He wasn't that good of a college player. He got a contract to play in France on a 2nd-tier team for about $40000/year. NBDL players could make more money doing that. Another player was a reasonably quick 5'10" shooting guard who could light it up. He could get hot and 40' jump shots were within his range. He played on a 2nd-tier European team (I don't remember which country). The last was a 7'1", 300-lb center with 3-pt range, decent post moves, great passing, and no drive. He quit college after his Junior year, sat out a while, and then signed a contract to play in Japan. He didn't make it one season. I think he plays for a ABA team now.
I had a math teacher in high school that played one game in the Mexican league. He was 6'11 and played for the Arkansas Razorbacks in the late 80s/early 90s. He was a total benchwarmer in college, but got to be on a lot of good teams and even made the final four.
