Morey mentioned a few times that Rockets is looking long term and trying to assembly a team with championship type of players. Who in our current team do you think fits the bill? Personally I think Martin improved his defense this year and he could be a perfect 3rd option(like Ray Allen in Boston). Battier is a perfect 5th option as starter on a championship team. If Lowry can keep the momentum going and improve his shooting/passing a little, he could be a championship level PG(like a poor man's Rondo--good defense/rebounding but can't shoot). Other than those, I think PP, Lee, AB can be championship team bench palyers. Scola/Hayes are very good one way players, but considering Scola's salary, I'd choose Hayes as a good championship team bench player. Thinking this way may get us close to what Morey is planning to do. If we keep some core players and add a couple all stars by trading other pieces(and absorbing salary) we can contend without rebuilding. Thoughts?
Rondo could afford to emphasize other areas to help the team..He played with 3 Hall of Famers who could still play at a high level...Lowry will never be like Rondo because he doesnt have that luxury..
They're all championship types with the right players around them. The problem isn't that we don't have any. We have too many of the same kind/type/role.
I think you have it backwards. "They" (role players) are all championship "types" if they are around the right player(s).
I think a boring lottery team should not talk about championship. Our next goal it to make this team interesting, winning or losing.
Sorry, Martin is a very good scorer but he is not championship type player. Championship type player is never too gentle, too soft and too nice. Scola may be, Lowry may be, but not Martin.
"Championship team type players" is just something that sounds good but ultimately makes no sense. So you really should not analyze it. It's stuff that coaches/GMs/Owners/Media/etc. use to make player(s) sound good or bad depending on need. It's like saying how a player is a "winner" or "baller" or "contributor", things that really can apply to any player given the right circumstances.
I guess i could have worded it better, but it's the same thing really....technically every player is surrounded by other players. Obviously i didn't mean we have stars and just need to acquire role guys around them.
he does the most on the court with the least. you just described Ray Allen and he fit in Boston just fine.
I agree with you about Martin and Battier being nice pieces on a championship level team, but Kyle Lowry nor Aaron Brooks are good enough to get us a ring no matter who we surround them with. The Rockets need to fix the point guard position first before they start building a championship caliber team. A poor man's Rondo? I wish Kyle Lowry was a poor man's Rondo, but he is not.
Aside from the fact that a few all-stars will never get the Rockets to a title, but simply maintain the level of hopeful playoff team for a number years, the biggest obstacle I see with this line of thinking is that in the process of acquiring said all-stars/super-stars is that the Rockets have to give up these players. Why? If a team is trading away an all-star or a superstar, generally that team is rebuilding so why would they want a solid role player or a 2nd tier star? Only if that player is an expiring contract is it worthwhile, and that means the Rockets are taking on bad contracts (very un-Moreylike) or there has to be a lot of other pieces going to that team. Instead, they would want draft picks or a young player who has star potential. None of the Rockets young players truly have star potential. Terrence Williams is the best "player with star potential" that the Rockets have and he was traded away for a mid-level 1st round pick and has not been given a chance to show if his potential is worthwhile. The only possible way this ever happens is with some sort of three way trade. And that trade will not happen during this current CBA, and may not even be possible during the next CBA.
Funny how you say that. I assume you also believe Fisher is better than Lowry and Brooks then? He is a PG on a championship team. What the Heat? They have one of the top records in the NBA with no names for PG's. You don't need a great PG to win rings, but if you don't have a great PG, you better damn well have someone who can handle ball handling duties.
Rondo 10.9 pts/ 12.2 ast/ 4.4 reb/ in 37.7 mpg TO Rate 14.3/ Ast Rate 46.3/ Reb Rate 7.3 Ast/TO 3.23 TS% .523 Lowry 12.1 pts/ 6.4 ast/ 3.9 reb/ in 33.2 mpg TO Rate 10.4/ Ast Rate 32.4/ Reb Rate 6.8 Ast/TO 3.11 TS% .535 Don't get me wrong I would rather have Rondo because he is obviously the better creator, but I would say Rondo Lite is the PERFECT description of Kyle Lowry. And lets not forget Rondo has the far superior team around him. Just saying
Allen strikes me as a tougher competitor with more of an edge than Kevin Martin. I think I have seen Allen scowl at other players, can't remember having seen Kevin Martin do that.
