The NBA draft is just around the corner and already many talented young players have a tough decision to make. Monday was the deadline for potential prospects who haven't hired an agent to decide whether or not to remain in the June 28 draft or return to school. One Houston native is using his opportunity as a life changing experience. With representatives from at least 10 NBA teams looking on, former Rockets star John Lucas put his potential draft picks thru drills to show their versatility. The players who are working out for the NBA scouts are hopeful about their future, but for Sean Williams the future is now. The Houston native has to make something happen now to impress the pro scouts, because his college days are over thanks to his dismissal from the Boston College team after being caught with mar1juana, for a second time. Before his suspension, the 6-10 Williams was thought to be a potential first round draft pick. The run in with the law however had his stock dropping. Now, after working with renowned teacher and the drug counselor Lucas he feels he's back on track. Among those showing interest was Rockets general manager Daryl Morey. Lucas for one believes Williams would be a perfect fit for the Rockets.
Lucas says Williams is a younger version of Amare Stoudemire. The ways Morey is speaking it looks like we might be trading this pick.
He's a poor man's Stromile Swift, not Amare Stoudemire. That includes work ethic and basketball IQ. Teams will be hesitant to give him guaranteed money so he should drop out of the first... I see him going early in the 2nd like James White did last year.
Don't act like you know who this kid is already. He's as big a question mark as any player in the draft, and nobody (not even himself) knows who he's going to turn out to be. What I know is that he's got size (can't teach it), athleticism (to some extent, can't teach it), and great timing for blocks (to some extent, can't teach it). That's a lot of natural talent, plus he looks to have been working on his post moves and he has developed a rather pretty touch on his short range jumpers. Not to mention he's been working with John Lucas. If anyone can straighten him out about the drug issue, it'd be him.
Is it just me, or does Morey seem a little more open when talking about team transactions than the previous regime?
Not arguing with you, you're right about his size and athleticism. But I just got some Eddie Griffin déjà vu. Unless he kill in these workouts, 2nd round
sean williams is the biggest question mark in the draft because he could go anywhere from 21st pick to like 38th. that's eighteen spots which he could end up to, no other player has the possibility of sliding that hard.
If Sean Williams is still there at 26, I would take a chance on him, but right now it seems like we are going to trade this pick.
If we can't package the pick for a proven player and Sean Williams is there at #26, i think hez worth the gamble.
I wouldnt mind if the Rockets took him. We need an athletic big man who can block shots and help Yao in the post.
That's touching, but what I know is that teams won't take a gamble on someone with multiple off court problems and on court motivation issues (ala Stromile Swift) like him in the first round. High risk athletes with decent potential end up going early in the 2nd, like James White. It's all about the guaranteed money, and GM's are fed up of high potential, low IQ/work ethic busts like Stromile Swift, Dermarr Johnson, Rodney White, etc.
You want to make a friendly bet on that? I'll bet that Sean will be gone in the first round and if I'm wrong I won't post on here for a month. You bet he won't go till the second round and since you seem to be so adamant you agree to shutup until the new season begins. Do we have a bet?
hmmm...a power foward with a lot of potential who has drug problems and motivation issues...that could be a description for Eddie Griffin!
griffins problem was he was a chronic maturbater not a chronic smoker. has williams had any history of anger issues? because if not the comparisons lack serious substance.
Actually, Eddie was suspended in early January of this year for 5 games for violating the NBA's drug rules. So perhaps Eddie has OTHER issues, but drugs were one as well.
Yeah, I just love how he doesn't pull any punches, seems to really have a plan, despite not being the best public speaker in the world, but who cares...
height? check potential? check Drugs? check motivation? check Caught masturbating? No Not quite there yet.
morey said we will be looking to add a 4 through trades and FA. he added that the players they are looking at are the same players they were looking at before the trade. translation: they're really not looking at any players. they will trade the pick.
i think all options are open. I remember hearing him mention the possibility of trading down and getting 2 picks in the 30's. i would be ok with that move so long as its done while they are on the clock.
