During the Bucks/Sixers Game 4, Bill Walton mentioned that L.A. may be on the verge of eclipsing the greatness of the 90's Bulls and the Celtics of 1950's and 60's. I just wanted to know what everyone thought about this statement. I personally feel that it is far too early for these Lakers to be mentioned along with the Celtics and Lakers of the 80's. And my feeling is that the accomplishments of Bill Russell's celtics will never be topped. In today's league, I don't see it as possible to be anywhere near as good as those Celtics teams were for anywhere near as long. ------------------

With Kobe and Shaq on the team, they have the potential to be as good as those dynasties, if they stay together. The problem with this, I feel, is that the game has changed greatly since then, and it seems that players aren't as prone to stick with teams like they once were. I feel that Kobe will want to leave LA at some point so that he can be the man somewhere else, and have the offense run through him on a regular basis. ------------------ Headley: Qualifications? Cowboy: Rape, murder, arson and rape. Headley: You said rape twice. Cowboy: I like rape.
Kobe has gone on record saying he's a Laker for life. (Granted, that's not much, especially with the rumor that went around about Washington...) Anyway, if Kobe wants to be the man, then he only has to wait till Shaq retires, which won't be long considering all the hacks that Shaq gets... or He can just wait till the 4th quarter. =\ ------------------
As long as Kobe & Shaq can keep their egos in check and barring a tramatic injury they could have a very long championship run.
Some thoughts from Lakers announcer Chick Hearn on the subject: (During game 4 versus the Spurs: ) "They are as good as the 1985 team with Magic and that gang. Right now, they're that good. I don't know how long it will last, but right now, they're that good." (A few minutes later, after the Shaq-led fast break: ) "I want to tell you what I think now . . . There's no team in Laker history that has ever played at a higher level of perfection than this team is doing." (Then, reflecting: ) "It's terrible to try to judge teams 20 years apart. Then you can only refer to memory, and memories sometimes fool you. The competition probably wasn't as good in those days, or these days, who knows? But off of what we're seeing from the Lakers now . . . this is an amazing basketball machine." Oh, and as a bonus, this nice exchange after one of Derek Fisher's zillion made shots: Stu Lantz: "Look at Gregg Popovich! He's scratching his head, saying, 'Who is Derek Fisher?' " Hearn: "He's the guy who turned the light on in a dark room." ------------------ [This message has been edited by Swopa (edited May 29, 2001).]
