cbssportsline: NJ did better than Rockets in draft

    whatever...

New Jersey, Grade A: Rather than just keep Eddie Griffin, Rod Thorn looked at this oft-injured group and blew the whole thing up.
So he decided to deal Griffin to Houston for its three picks:
Richard Jefferson, Jason Collins and Brandon Armstrong, and they'll like rugged forward Brian Scalabrine as a steal in the second round. But all of that became moot when he sent Stephon Marbury to Phoenix in a package for Jason Kidd and others. Some of the above might be part of the deal, but more important
is the aggressive manner in which Thorn went about his business after spending a year looking at virtually the same dysfunctional
Nets they've always been. Kudos are in order just for having the guts to blow it up, regardless of the outcome. Grade: A.

Houston, Grade B: With Hakeem Olajuwon on his way out the door or to the basketball netherworld if he does stick around for
another couple of seasons, the Rockets had to get somebody special up front. To do so, they packaged their three No. 1 picks to get Seton Hall's 6-9 nasty Eddie Griffin. He's only 19, but he's very tough and aggressive, something they sorely needed. It's probably a shot in the dark adding Terence Morris, who could
have gone in the first round last year, only to fade into the woodwork as an underachieving senior. But he does have talent if Rudy T can only find the right button to push. Grade: B.

It seems that people are judging NJ's draft by the trades they did afterwards. It still seems to me that they should have kept the pick. I still feel like they could have gotten better than what we had to offer. Maybe they were afraid EG would punch Byron Scott in the yapper for slandering him in the media the way he did K-Mart. I can understand the media thinking that we did not accomplish what we set out to do as far as drafting a brutish 4 or 5, but they are not as knowledgeable about our team as the Rockets' front office is (or even a large percentage of our fans).

Nice... so, "even if you screwed up making the deal, that's ok, because you'll still get an A for doing the deal".

Kinda like Golden State had the guts to trade away Robert Parish, Kevin McHale, etc.

    ...hi Swopa!

We finish with the best record ever of a non playoff team, add a week ago's #1, and get a B.

I sure hope they gave at least an A- to the Lakers season, I hear they had a good one.

I've actually read a ton of commentators suggest that the Rockets gave up too much for Griffin.

    Only punches will tell!

Sorry, these guys are worthless. People see "oooh... Houston gave up THREE WHOLE FIRST ROUNDERS!" and congratulate NJ.

You know what this reminds me of? That old joke about the kid who traded his dollar for two quarters because "two is more than one." Sorry, quality over quantity.

COME ON. Richard Jefferson is the only one of those players that has a good shot at being a decent NBA player. And he'll never be more than Rip Hamilton.

Armstrong? The guy has "back-up PG" written all over him. Collins? HA! Waste of guaranteed money for an IR roster filler.

Eddie Griffin? May be a bust... but he could also be an all-star.

I recall ESPN saying that Kenny Thomas at #22 was a bad pick. I also recall some year CBS stating that they were surprised that the Rockets didn't draft God Shammgod. Where's that guy now? I think he sold me some fries.

    I said, "Thanks, God".

As long as everyone keeps thinking our deals are bad, we can keep making them. Then when we've stockpiled enough talent, it'll be too late. Too bad they didn't give us an "F".
