http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/story/10193499 Wow....don't know if this has been posted or not, but this dude feels like the 'Stros have 3 of the 10 worst everyday players in baseball right now gracing their starting lineup. Ouch! Feel free to discuss this and/ or the list itself....
granted. biggio, everett, and ausmus are all terrible. they wouldn't be nearly as bad if half of our so-called "sluggers" would hit the damn ball. Lance? Luke? LISTENING?
Actually, I take that back with the exception being Everett. Everett has never batted .185 when Berkman and others were doing their job in the lineup. This is a new low , even for Everett.
No, as the poster above said, this a new low for Everett. His days are numbered if he can't get it far above .200. You can't really set some arbitrary BA (or better yet, OBP) for a guy and say, "below this line, your defense won't make up for it!" But, I'd hazard a guess that consistently under .240 will cut his tenure as a starting SS pretty short, even though is the best defensive SS in baseball.
I love Everett's defense, but he is a rally killer. For a team that has recently been struggling to acore runs, it becomes VERY noticable.
That article is total BS. The Astros should have 4 of the worst players in baseball, not just 3. Where is Ensberg?
You may not be able to set exact stats, but there has to be a point where AE's poor offense offsets his great defense. There has to be a point where he costs us more runs offensively than he saves defensively. Of course thats pretty impossible to quantify. But where ever that line is, AE is certainly below that now. I could maybe accept .220 from AE (moreso if Ausmus didn't suck), but if he can't get above .200 with steady playing time, the arguement that it's OK because of his defense goes out the window.
There's no way .220 is acceptable. It's not like every other shortstop in the leauge is kicking the ball and has zero range.
I hate to sound like a broken record, but it's not just these guys batting average that kills their offensive value, it's that they do nothing else well on offense either. You can live with a 0.220-0.250 average if it isn't so empty. Neither Ausmus nor Everett add any walks or power to their average, which is what makes them so poor. Mickey Tettleton was a catcher who routinely hit for a lower average than Ausmus does. Yet his ability to hit for power and draw walks made him a plus offensive player.
i used to be a fan of everett and his defense but even i know its time for a change. watching him play graceful defense makes me but when hes up to bat i . if roy o loves to have him field then he should just field when the wizard is pitching. otherwise bring up bruntlett or burke and send down moehler.
oh do i love it. i knew this 3 years ago, before everybody else in the entire world, but i still love it.
seriously, how many of you read this and thought to yourselves...."whoa, does rocketfat write for cbssportsline?"
We truly have too many weaknesses on this team. It seems as if Purpurra makes all the wrong decisions. I would love to see Gerry back.
