Possible top pick of this year's NBA draft Yao Ming will not be present at the ceremony scheduled on June 26 due to national team duty, said the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) on Friday.

¡¡¡¡"Yao is training with the national side in preparation for a four-squad tournament later this month which features Yugoslavia, Italy, Australia and China and the World Men's Basketball Championship in Autumn and the Asian Games in October," read a press release from the CBA, China's governing body for the sport.

¡¡¡¡"We have decided that he not go to the United States to attend the Draft after discussions with the national team.

¡¡¡¡"Whether Yao be present at the Draft or not, it will not affecthis future in the NBA,"

¡¡¡¡The CBA confirmed that the Houston Rockets had contacted with them to discuss selecting the 2.26-meter (7-5 feet) center from the Shanghai Sharks with their first pick of the NBA draft in New York on June 26.

¡¡¡¡"Recently, Houston Mayor, the Rockets' general manager, coach and lawyer as well as the Shanghai Sharks and others concerned hadcontacted us addressing Yao's play in the NBA," it added. "All of these contacts have been friendly and effective."

Lets not overreact its just that the CBA doesn't want him to waste time at the draft, when he could be training with the national team, at least, thats the logical reason for such a move.

This does NOT reflect on his availability to play for the Rockets.

Besides, did we really want to see that Craig Sager exclusive interview with Yao? I like Yao, he seems personable and funny - but I'm not convinced Sager has a central nervous system, he's dumb as a rock.

P.S. : The over/under on this thread is 65 replies - I'm taking the under on this one, I've just got a hunch.

That Chinese reporter Sun Chun, who interviewed Rudy at Beijing, worte an article today -" The last day of Yao Ming." He said in this article "we are still waiting for the miracle. We are looking forward to the miracle - until the last moment." I almost cried when I read his article. Now, I knew no miracle would happen in China. Another report said because of "practice", Ming might not have the chance to see the broadcast of draft conference. I feel sorry about Yao Ming. I hope everything will be fine for him.

Personally I really hope that he can attend the Draft at New York, which means a lot to him and all the Chinese fans around the world... but putting it in another way, the exhibition games against Yugoslavia, Italy and Australia are valuable to him too, it can help him to gain more international experience before he plays the World Games and the NBA...

I feel disappointed if it is true that he won't attend the Draft, but it's still not too bad as long as he will be a Rocket next season.

The four-squad tournament will begin at June 30th. Yao Ming still has time to go back to attend this game if he could be present at NY.

And I think June 26th is a very important moment for Yao Ming, for Chinese basketball and for all Chinese people......

Thanks for telling us that. I hope that they (whoever involved in making the decision) change their mind before the draft day...

    Let's pray for the best...

WindandSea: Regardless of what happens in the draft, I certainly hope -- and I'm sure I am not alone in this desire -- that you will continue to have verbal tea with us (the Clutch City board members). Your observations are not only welcome, but prized.

That is impossible. CBA has released the official statement. The "June 26th" issue is ended.

Well, if Ming has national team commitments, best for him to keep those. It's a long, long, long flight from Asia. I flew to Tokyo, had a great time, came back after 9 days, and was WIPED OUT for a week. It exhausts you. Ming can't have that if he's playing some serious hoops.

'T'would be nice to get a satellite feed from there, though.

"Hello from China! Can Steve come out and play?"

"Uh, Stevie's a little indisposed right now."

610AM just blew this one WAY out of proportion. They came on with a bulletin - MING WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DRAFT!

Maybe Stern can give Mings Rocket's hat to the #15 pick and he can accept it in place of Yao.

Think about the trip! It is really a long and tired one.
Everytime before I was on this 15 hours flight, I felt nerours.
After the trip, I cannot feel my feet. We have to blame the technology who made slow planes .
