Cuttino Mobley Chat Second round draft picks don't always even make an NBA roster, much less make an impact, but Rockets guard Cuttino Mobley has defied the odds and expectations after being selected 41st in the 1998 draft. Mobley saw action in every game but one his rookie season, averaging 9.9 points in 27.7 minutes per game. He made 37 starts at point guard and was rewarded for his efforts with All-Rookie Second Team honors. While Mobley's role changed to coming off the bench in his sophomore season, his production only increased. He averaged 15.8 ppg, which led all NBA reserves in scoring and he finished second in voting for the 1999-2000 Sixth Man of the Year Award. Last year, Mobley's numbers continued to rise as he averaged career highs of 19.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in 79 games. He teamed up with Comets forward Sheryl Swoopes in the 2ball competition at NBA All-Star Saturday and was named the NBA Player of the Week on March 19 after averaging 27.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists in three wins. This season, Mobley's ranked fifth in the league in minutes per game (41.5) and he's scored in double figures in every game but two. The Rhode Island product also played football during his prep career at Maine Central Institute and is a cousin of Denver Broncos linebacker John Mobley. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gail from proxy.aol.com at 2:34pm ET Hello Cuttino, I love your game. What one area did you look to improve this off season? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:34pm ET My weight and post game. I lifted a lot this summer to increase my endurance in the fourth quarter. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jordan from toronto91.dialup.canada.psi.net at 2:34pm ET Who was your role model growing up? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:38pm ET Probably Randall Cunningham and Muhammed Ali. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alexandra from cavern.carleton.ca at 2:37pm ET How did you find the transition into the NBA? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:38pm ET I guess it was a maturation process. You don't have college coaches helping you as much. In the pros, you either do it or you don't. It make you mentally tougher. You need that to survive in this league. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shawn from houston-06-07rs.tx.dial-access.att.net at 2:38pm ET Which individual opponent brings out the best in you athetically? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:39pm ET Really everybody, but the Lakers the most. They are the top team. Any place that has a real lively crowd gets me going too. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Evens Monvil (Queens,NY) at 2:39pm ET Hey Cuttino, how bad is your latest injury? And how difficult is it watching on the bench? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:40pm ET I was hardheaded. I sprained my ankle, but only gave it two days to rehab. The next two games I played a lot, so I wasn't giving it a chance to heal. So now, I am taking some time off before it gets too bad. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charli at 2:40pm ET So Mr Mobley, what kind of social activities do you involve yourself with? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:41pm ET Mostly, I go to the movies. I saw the Heist recently. It was sooooooo good. I also hang out a lot with my family. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John from tnt9.mia1.da.uu.net at 2:42pm ET Cat i think you and Steve are doing your thing and i catch your games whenever i can even though im in miami. But i wanted to ask what do you think of all the fines for short length? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:42pm ET I always complain about them. The pants shouldn't be super baggy, but they shouldn't be super shotr either. They should meet us halfway. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony Gilbert at 2:44pm ET How is it having someone from back home on the team in Eddie Griffin? I am proud of the both of you. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:44pm ET I am happy it. We always joke about Philly slang and have a lot of fun together. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- zebra at 2:44pm ET Do you have any special pregame rituals? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:45pm ET I always go to the Olive Garden beforehand. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pablo Lopez from houston.rr.com at 2:45pm ET Hey do you think that the lack of a true center in your team is going to hurt you in the later season, or do you think you make up for it in different areas?? Just curious... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:45pm ET We make up for it in other areas. Most teams don't really have a true center, so they have to make up for it too. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roxanne Bright from doe.gov at 2:45pm ET What advice do you give to the rookies on the team Terence and Eddie? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:46pm ET Just let them know they are not alone. Encourage them to work hard. It can be lonely, but you have to show them how it should be done. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sha from uta.edu at 2:46pm ET Cat, how did you and Steve become so close? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:47pm ET God -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Drew from ma.monster.com at 2:47pm ET When you get to the playoff this year, and yes, I said WHEN...who do you see being the most trouble, besides the Lakers? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:48pm ET Ourselves. We have to make sure we have gelled by playoff time. Our biggest opponent is ourselves. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ryan Dale at 2:48pm ET Cuttino...in your opinion, who is the best overall guard in the NBA and why...thanks -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:48pm ET The best overall guard is Tracy McGrady. He has all the tools. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BIG E from 52.137.125.dlls.grid.net at 2:49pm ET Have you and steve ever played one on one. if so who won?? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:49pm ET We don't play one-on-one. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eric Raines from z064003035.was-dc.dsl.cnc.net at 2:49pm ET This is Eric from DC. Have you been picking up any moves from Stevie? I noticed a little of that DC play in your game. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:50pm ET Those are Philadelphia moves! (laughs) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dawn from washington-12rh15rt.dc.dial-access.att.net at 2:50pm ET How would you describe your game on the basketball court and does it compare to any players from the past? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:50pm ET Maybe Scottie Pippen and Eddie Jones. Just try and do it all. Be a complete player. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charli at 2:51pm ET Have you ever had another passion besides basketball? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:45pm ET I wanted to be in the Mafia in the 1920's. I thought that was really cool. I also loved the Rat Pack. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cuttino Mobley at 2:54pm ET Thanks to all the fans for giving me support. Look for me and Steve Francis in the All-Star Game soon. http://www.nba.com/rockets/chat_mailbox/mobleychat_011128.html
