Is there any sort of buyout in Kelvin Cato's contract where Les can just say "Here's your $XX Million. Now please leave and never return" ? ------------------ Anyone need a C/C++/Win32/HTML/PHP/SQL/Java/Perl/x86 coder?

As I understand the CBA, it's probably not a very practical idea. Let's suppose Cato agrees and the buyout is set at 60% of $36,960,000 (the amount the Rockets would pay him over the next 5 years). The $22,176,000 figure is then divided by 5 years. Each year of the next 5 years, the Rockets would take a cap hit of $4,435,200. Even at 50%, the cap hit would be $3,696,000/year for 5 years. The CBA spreads the buyout value over the remaining life of the contract and this does not go away if he signs with another team. IMHO, the Rockets would be better off trying to trade him or hope is he has a season or two with adequate stats (read - plays up to potential). I believe this is what happened recently with Mitch Richmond where the Wizards paid him $10.0M to buyout his remaining 2 years for $20.0M. The Wiz will take a cap hit of $5.0M/yr instead of $10.0M/yr over the next 2 seasons. ------------------ Raef to Rocks in '01-'02!
