Blendting season heats up with 2 performances this week in what I’m calling the “Washington Bangs ‘em Farewell Tour ’04” which runs through July 23rd. Catch this mini-run of Houston and Austin shows before Washington goes chasing his Hollywood dreams of becoming Tom Cruise’s sidekick (or pool boy). THURSDAY, JULY 8 Dean’s Credit Clothing (downtown) 316 Main St. Houston, TX No cover. 2 sets, starting roughly 10:15ish. Party like an All Star in downtown Houston, home of this baseball season’s All Star weekend. We can’t promise you all the glitterati will be at Dean’s on Thursday, but the beer will be cold and the jams will be hot. SATURDAY, JULY 10 Rhythm Room 1815 Washington Houston, TX 10pm. With special guests: The Flavor Conductors. The FCs will be bringing along the sweetest light show this side of 290 (or I-10 and 71, depending on which route they take). Whether you like dancin’ to the grooves or movin’ to the visual wonders of spinning colored lights, or just like hanging out with your friends while shakin’ your booty to some loud, live music this show has it all. FRIDAY, JULY 23 Maggie Mae’s 323 E. 6th St. Austin, TX 9:30pm. Again with The Flavor Conductors The wait is over for all you Austin blendt fans as we make our return to Maggie Mae’s with our buddies, The Flavor Conductors. Even though I don't live in Houston, I think it would be helpful to those who are interested in coming to have an idea of what type of band you are - meaning, what type of music do you play (hard rock, acoustic-folk, pop, cover band, etc) and who are your musical influences.
Yeah, one day (soon) we'll put up some samples on the site. Right now we have a couple of live shows on CD but the quality isn't that great so we've hesitated to share them. We're going into the studio next weekend, though, so we should soon have some musical gems up there. In the meantime, I guess you could say we play improvisational southern rock with funky, jazz type roots. But we don't like to be pidgeonholed into any particular genre. Recent covers include: Rock & Roll - Velvet Underground I'm Alright (Cadyshack themesong) - Kenny Loggins Boogie On Reggae Woman - Stevie Wonder Just Kissed My Baby - Meters Eyes of the World - Grateful Dead Back Where it All Begins - Allman Brothers Blackberry Blossom - traditional bluegrass tune Fearless - Pink Floyd Those are the ones that popped into my head. We play others as well. But you can kinda see that we jump around quite a bit. What's important is that the ladies keep dancing in front of the stage
Cool, I'll try to come out Saturday. One of my bands - Slapshifter - is playing at Rudyard's on Friday night, July 9. I'm actually sitting in with Stacey Steger & the Satellites as well (they are opening) so I'm pulling double duty that night. Slapshifter is sort of a bluesy-ish hard rock band kinda in the vein of Led Zepplin or thereabouts.
Not sure if I can make the RR show this weekend, but keep us posted, I'd love to catch yall at Last Concert.
Low Rider! once again, I attest, these guys rock the house, and Toast, I will be in for late August, early September, let your band know I'll be ready to blow, tell Eggy whats up for me. Rock the house this weekend guys!
Yeah, Fearless is a nice song. Especially after we've been playing pretty fast & furious and need a little chill down time. This Rhythm Room show should be pretty sweet. Our buddies (The Flavor Conductors) have commissioned an excellent lighting guy with a sweet rig to come out and make things happen. Not to mention those guys are a whole lotta fun. Some of their cooler covers include: Billy Jean - Michael Jackson Ghostbusters - Ray Parker Jr. The song from Cheech & Chong's "Up in Smoke" that they played @ the battle of the bands. I forget what it's called, but it has that "bah-nah-nah bah-nah-nah bu-bu-bum" part. Jeff, I dunno if I can make it out to Rudz on Friday. With gigs on Thurs & Sat, the special lady is demanding a "date night" on Friday, so I'll hafta comply. I'll make it out to another Slapshifter show soon, though.
I have a feeling at least SOMEONE from this board showed up last night, 'cause we have a new contact in our email list that has Rockets written all over it Those of you who play in bands around here will appreciate how difficult a room Dean's is to play in. It's a long, thin room - wood everywhere - and the band is squeezed into a knook (or cranny) between the door & the bar. Sound's bouncing everywhere and the whole time we're wondering if anything's too loud or soft and what it sounds like out there in the audience. From my vantage point, it was LOUD. But hey, it's downtown, where I must say the ladies do, indeed, dress nicely. At least I thought so. And after a couple of jaeger shots, did it really even matter?
What time? I have to "interview" a potential new guitarist for my band at 8, but that shouldn't take longer than 45 minutes. Plus (shameless plug here), I'll be flyering for my own CD release show (July 29th w/Steve Burns - the Blues Clues guy) and Rudyard's is a good place to do that.
Your name isn't Justin or Mike is it? I played 'Fearless' in band with them years ago and we did a really good version. The Cheech and Chong song is 'Earache my Eye.' I played it with my high school band. It never went over really well, because nobody at that age and time (early90s) really knew Cheech and Chong that well. Comedy Central has gone a long way toward helping the kids rediscover them.
Nope and nope. I guess I'm not TOO surprised others have pulled Fearless off. It's a good tune. Yeah, Earache my Eye, that's it! Those guys do it real well, too. It has some funky "harmonies" I guess you'd call 'em. It would work better with horns, but hey, you gotta do whatcha gotta do.
Don't know if anyone else here was there, but I checked out Jeff's two performances last night at Rudyard's and enjoyed both. He's a great bass player and a good guy as well - we were able to talk gear for a few minutes between sets. Jeff, sorry I couldn't stay for the 2nd band's full set, but I was turning into a pumpkin at that point and still had to flyer for my band. I saw that Orange is In is playing later this month - make sure to announce it then. Again, great show.
Major Malcontent and I were there and I agree with subtomic - Slapshifter was very cool. I enjoyed Jeff's playing and also had a nice time talking to him. I'm really looking forward to catching Orange is In. I'm not able to go see blendt tonight, but I will try to catch one of your August shows.
Thanks for coming out, guys. It was good to meet you. sub: We definitely should get together and talk gear some more. We bass players have to stick together.
I liked Slapshifter and Jeff has some formidable chops as a bass player. The lead singer has kind of a Janis Joplin thing going except she isn't homely and smiles more. Sorry I missed Toast's band this time around, but I hope to catch them another time.
