Well? We have two cats and one or both of them forgot that the damn litter box was upstairs and pissed on our stairs. What's the best way to get that God-awful smell out?

    Thanks.

my cat has been pissing on the carpet in front of our front door for a month or two. We've tried everything and that damn cat just won't stop. I've got a cousin who works at a Vet Clinic who is going to give me some type of solution that he says will work but i am not putting much faith in it.

I've had my carpet cleaned, the guy even gave us some solution he uses that he's not suppose to give out. He swore it would get rid of the smell, sure it worked for 10 minutes then the smell came back.

The best thing i've used is carpet freshner. I just sprinkle some on the spot and it smells like flowers all day.

Eventually we are going to have to remove the padding under the carpet. There really isn't anything you can do to get rid of the odor, you can only get rid of it temporarily.

Cat pee has amonia in it, hence the strong smell.

We had a problem with one of our cats constantly peeing where he wasn't suppose to.

You can pick up a good cleaner at Petsmart or Petco. Woolite makes a specific pet cleaner that you can get in the grocery store. We found that it works the best.

One last tip, get a lamp with a black light. Our cat actually sprayed when he peed, so it was over a larger area. We didnt realize it until we used a black light to see where all it was. We had assumed he had peed in a small concentrated area.

Finish it off with some Freebreeze.

Oh, forgot to add one last thing which is pretty important. Cleaning the carpet will do no good if the padding underneath is soiled too. Depending on how much your cat peed, it might have soaked all the way through the carpet into the jute/padding. Pull back the carbet and smell the padding underneath or see if its wet. If it is, then its ruined (its basically like a sponge and can't really be cleaned). However, its easy to cut it out and you can buy replacement padding from Lowes or Home Depot, which is pretty cheap (.25 a square foot when i bought it).

UGH, my girlfriend has cats. I am familiar with this scenario.

For the stain - Spot Shot, it's in a blue and orange can, gets EVERYTHING OUT!

For the smell - Febreeze will mask it only somewhat, and as soon as it dries, the pee smell shines through again. I've found that a 1/1 mixture of Pine Sol (or other like Pine cleaner), and water poured over the stain works nicely. Plus, who doesn't like a nice pine scent?

My girlfriend's cat pissed in her closet over a period of months and her and her mother tried a lot of thigs to get it out but the aroma of ca piss still leaves a slight smell in the air. Just get used to it and you won't notice.

Not only that, if it has been going on a long time, it may have seeped through the padding into the floor boards.

Luckily it's a recent thing. When I get back into town tomorrow, I'll check underneath. That would suck.

RM95, Codell is all over this. I completely agree with what he's said. Mrs. B-Bob, when we first got together, had a geriatric cat that, on its last day of life, gave us something to remember: an enormous and pungent piss puddle on the living room rug.

We have never (even with all the suggestions above) been able to *completely* remove the smell.

    It is the Death Pee.

For future reference, get a magnetically controlled cat door. You don't have "indoor cats" do you?

Our cats come and go as they please... and the going is done outside!

    Study in (human) neurosis:
At our old place (nice back yard), we had one of those doors and it was great. But a neighbor kept feeding both of our cats some sort of nasty canned wet cat food, and the cats were getting fat *and* bringing home some of the nastiest flatus in the animal kingdom. We tried locking that cat door, but the smarter cat would literally disassemble the whole thing at night. She never got out, but she eventually broke it. This including pulling the battery out and stripping the battery wires of their insulation! I think she'd seen me changing the battery maybe.

Not a problem since we moved.

Yes, our cats are inside cats. We saved one from the SPCA who had been completely de-clawed (front and back). The other one is a kitten who was thrown from a moving car in front of my roommate's mom's house, so we took it in. They've seemed to stop and luckily, you can't smell it except when you first walk into the house (the front door leads directly to stairs). Hopefully these suggestions will work.

My wife had this plant in our bedroom of our new house. The plant was in a plastic planter that was then placed inside of a nice looking stoneware planter. It sat directly on the carpet. She nurtured that plant for over a year before it started to look like crap. She decided that it needed some sun, so she asked me to move it outside.

When I moved it, I realized that she was overwatering it. How did I know? The dirty water was leaking out of the bottom of the plastic planter and through the hole of stoneware planter and into the rather expensive upgrade carpet of our new home. We never saw it because it obviously leaked slowly through the plant and straight down to the floor under the carpet.

We had bought one of those Hoover carpet cleaners to clean the carpet in our old house, so I brought it out and tried to use it on this spot that was under that planter. As I tried to clean it though, the stain seemed to spread. In fact, after the first hour or so, my spot that was about the size of a grapefruit had grown to cover several square feet.

It was then that I realized that all of that dirty water over the past year had leaked down into the pad under the carpet, and I was just sucking it back up with through the clean areas of the carpet above the soiled pad. My thought process was that if I could pull that crap up enough to dirty the carpet above it, I could pull it up enough to clean it.

Instead of using the cleaner per it's instructions, I decided to boil water, and then add carpet cleaner to the really hot water. I'd then take oxyclean poweder and sprinkle it over the carpet. Using a broom, I ground the oxyclean into the carpet and then poured the boiling carpet cleaner water directly over it. Then I'd use the hoover to suck up the water. I put gallons of water through that process and eventually, the water started coming up clean. A few more cycles after that, the carpet started looking clean.

I'm not going to lie.....it was a chore. But the effects were well worth it. In the end, the carpet...and the pad underneath.....were clean.

I know this because the builder later had to destroy and rebuild part of our house to procure a Windstorm certificate that he failed to get while building the house. We saw the pad when our bedroom carpet got pulled, and although it had water stains, you could tell that it had been cleaned.

Don't underestimate the power of those carpet cleaners. Ours has paid for itself many times over, and I'll never be without one.
