Not sure if there any fans here of Mencia, but anybody go to his show at the Toyota Center yesterday? Damn, he can put on a good show. His opening acts were great too, with JoKoy being the best one of the 3 openers. Carlos' act himself was great. Of course he stressed about Steve Irwin, Katrina victims, and his usual racial stuff. But he did bring up a few things he's already said on his "No Strings Attached" DVD and his other acts. Carlos is a class act too. Before the show started, there was a line to get his autograph. Then after the show he signed autographs again, no matter how long the line is. He was at a table near the store, and the line almost went halfway around the arena. The only thing that sucked was you had to buy some merchandise in order for him to sign. I already bought a shirt, my gf and cousin bought a hat. After my gf and I took a pic with Carlos, my other cousin gave him a advertisment postcard they gave out for his "No Strings Attached" DVD for him to sign, and the people running the autograph session said "only merchandise", my cousin was about to leave, but Carlos said "Nah man, i'll sign it, I didn't want you to stand in line for nothing" and signed it for him. Class act I say. Anybody else go?
Thats pretty cool he sat around and signed autographs. Although, i'm not really a fan of his show, i find him kind of annoying.
He's somewhat funny, but some of his jokes seem to drag on. He's no Jim Gaffigan, though. Gaffigan is the pinnacle of comedy today.
I got tired of Carlos Mencia. His "Duh dada" line annoys me a lot. And he's not even Mexican. His real name is Ned, he's half Honduran and half German.
In past years I've been a big fan of Mencia. Like anything else, comedy and 'sense of humor' is subjective. For some people Mencia does it. For others it's Dane Cook, or Gaffigan, or Chris Rock, etc... That being said, Mencia (though not necessarily through any conscious fault of his own) has changed since he broke out onto Comedy Central. I can't quite put my finger on it, but after seeing him a couple of times this past year it seems he's lost his edge (for lack of a better word). Last nights concert was literally a 95% regurgitation of past material. And I don't mean in a good way. He was on auto-pilot. I get the feeling he's got so many other irons in the fire with his t.v. show that he can't devote the time and effort it takes to keep his material fresh for his live act anymore. I guess it's just the nature of the beast.
wow, guess im one of the very few fans, i admit, I didn't like him at first, but after watching his "No Strings Attached" act on Comedy Central, he won me over. I admit, his show is basically a replacement of Dave Chappelle, but not just as good. anyways, for what its worth, here's my pics with Mencia and my gf.
well, when i go to the Improv and Laff Stop, they really don't, just only if u go up to them, not like "we'll be out in front and we'll meet everybody thats in line" kinda of deal. then again, those shows only have like 100 people, unlike 2/3rds of the Toyota Center
I keep hearing people say this. Where are you guys getting that from? He's half Honduran/half Mexican. Not that it even matters.
I have heard alot of debate about his heritage, most of it centering around the fact he is not Mexican, but portrays that he is for laughs. Not that it matters in the end. My gf wanted to go to the show. I even looked into getting tickets, told her I had gotten the tix, but totally forgot about it until around 8 last night when she said something about it. I totally played it off like I forgot and the show already started and by the time we get there it would be over. Which was the case. I don't really find Mencia funny at all. Seems like he is trying to be the Latin Chappelle and it falls flat most of the time. I swear the few times I have seen his show they were using a laugh track as I heard laughter, but no one in the crowd was laughing. His stuff just seems so basic that it just isn't funny to me. I read funnier and more creative stuff while browsing message boards.
