http://fantasybaseball.rotoworld.com/content/playernews.asp?sport=MLB Carlos Hernandez allowed one run in eight innings and struck out seven yesterday for Magallanes of the VWL. Hernandez is 6-1 with a 3.00 ERA in eight starts in Venezuela. He's going to be a very good minor league signing for some team, and a guaranteed deal can't be ruled out. Dec. 10 - 4:14 pm et
Man, I really hope this is a mirage and that he will not come back and haunt the Astros for letting him go...
Luke Scott is kicking ass in winterball too... yet everybody here is begging Drayton to sign a big-name slugger. I'd like to see more about Carlos Hernandez's progress... namely, how his control looks, and what his fastball is topping out at. In the big leagues, after injury, he needed pin-point control to avoid getting shelled beause he had lost so much velocity on his fastball.
Yeah, it's winterball. This doesn't really impress me all that much. He had some good stretches in the minors too towards the end of the season, but most people that watched him didn't necessarily think he was back to a point where he would be viable MLB starter. I think a good deal of Carlos's effectiveness when he initially came up as a rookie was based on his electric fastball. He played that curve off the FB, and it was a devestating combination. But now...not nearly as much. I think we as Astros fans are going to have to accept that Carlos will probably never be able to help the major league team again in any way other than occasional spot starts due to injuries.
as much as i love carlos hernandez....throwing one hitters in venezuelan winter league isn't facing the st. louis cardinals, or the atlanta braves, or the white sox....it is venezuelan winter league. i hope he does make it back to the majors and can become a productive bullpen guy or starter. if the astros are smart they should give him a 2 yr. minor league deal and see how he progresses because he had some great stuff and potential before the injury. if he can get back, which can take some time, it's worth the risk and wait.
I hope the Astros can re-sign him to a minor league contract. Even if he doesn't make it back as a starter, I'd like to see if he can help with the bullpen. I think that as long as he can throw strikes when he comes into games, he'd be a real asset to the team.
he has a 3.00 era in winter-ball, not that big of a deal. i actually hope he comes back and does well because i can't really fault the astros for letting him go. that kid had all-star stuff and poise all-over him and he totally got robbed of it.
