Well, I have been offered an opportunity in the same sales field (Industrial) to make double the base salary I have been making and to get a company car and full benefits....sound like a no-brainer? Well, here's the catch...the company I am with (have been for 7 years) is a family business...work with brother and father..staying there, I have total security.

I have a wife and 3 yr old daughter. I havent had a lot of opportunity to be exposed to a TON of account opportunities as the market for our product lines have dropped, thus, I am not making much more $$ now than I made when I started 7 years ago.

I'm assured of DOUBLE the base salary plus limitless commission and would work from home...but would be thrown into the pressure cooker. Is this the kind of opportunity I leave the family business for?

I know that ultimately, my family would certainly understand the opportunity...but it would leave them in a vulnerable position needing to replace me.

Thanks for any insight you might have my clutch bretheren!!!

Your family might be glad to cost cut your salary.

You could gain more experience and expand your contacts to maybe come back to the family business when your dad retires.

More money is good if the job doesn't kill you. Be prepared for management to hound you like you're worthless.

Family is huge, but you have to decide where you'll be happiest. More money is great and can help you have a more comfortable life. Personally, I would also enjoy the added pressure.

On the other hand, with the economy the way it is, that job security is nice.

Have you spoken with your family about it? Also you can always help try to get a replacement. There are always people out there looking for an opportunity.

If you are working from home in the second job, why can't you do both?

Well, both are outside sales positions, totally different fields and both require full time devotion...I would be getting a big boost in base salary, which would really help us (wife and I) to begin putting money away...as it is now, we are in more of a month to month pattern....I think this could be one of those times in my life in which I take a bold step and make it happen....I just dont want to leave the current business in a weak position.
