The car: a 1992 Saturn SL2 4-door sedan. It currently has a stock stereo and speakers and the speakers need to be replaced. I'm going to ask for new speakers for Christmas. Since the car is an old POS and I'm sticking with the stock stereo, I'm not expecting to impress or out-stereo anyone. Just want some speakers that will give good sound and won't blow. What do you think of these?: Decent speakers?: Kenwood KFC-C1739ie (available here for $52 shipped) Nicer speakers?: Pioneer TS-A1780R (available here for $71 shipped) Very nice speakers?: Infinity Kappa 63.5i (available here for $135 shipped. If you know of better alternatives in the same price ranges as above, please suggest. -- droxford
I've got a 1991 escort and i've got Sony Xplod speakers in the front and the back. They sound great, haven't had any problems with them whatsoever.
(my compliments on a clever witticisim). The car's not THAT bad. And, it's not my fault - my wife bought it before I ever met her, and now I'm stuck with it. -- droxford
i didnt mean it like that...im sorry...i just mean that i drive around sometimes and see these cars (that cant be worth more than 2,000) driving down the street with a stereo system that could blow the roof off of the dome
Oh... well.. congratulations on stumbling into a clever witticism! I agree - I'm not one of those people. My car is a POS. Stereo is a POS. Speakers are just broken. The replacement speakers need to be able to accept enough volume to drown out my voice as I sing along. -- droxford
those kenwoods are nice. there are some pioneer's at fry's right now for 99 i think . great speakers.
Make sure you get some efficient speakers......I doubt you'll have much power driving them with the stock head unit. To ensure the most efficiency, look for the higest decibel rating under "sensitivity."
a-ha... very interesting I tried to stay away from 2-way speakers, thinking that having 3-way or 4-way would deliver better sound, and reduce stress on the speaker overall. Does that sound right? -- droxford
imo, 2-way, 3-way, 5-way, special laminate, titanium tweeter, etc, etc......these are all marketing gimmicks. bose, which many ppl seem to like, most of their designs are 1-way and crafted w/ inexpensive paper cones! the only way to tell what's good to YOUR EARS is to close your eyes and actually listen to the speakers yourself.....and as Pole mentioned, make sure the speakers are matched to your specific amp/setup....even the top-rated speakers will sound like crap if improperly matched to the other components..
Sorry just mentioning the best! The other two you mentioned are good brans though, as many people on the thread have already pointed out.
I see what you're saying, but I don't think that really holds true. In fact, you're increasing the number of drivers.....which in a speaker....is increasing the points of failure. I bet these would sound good for you, and they're really efficient. I know you could find them for less than $100 a pair: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-EeCVk0RwC16/cgi-bin/Prodview.asp?c=10&g=400&I=113KFCX168&s=0&cc=01
My old friend Pricegrabber found 'em for $84 plus $11 shipping. ... and here's where I'm confused (as a newbie to this stuff). What makes the Kenwood eXcelon KFC-X168 better than the Kenwood KFC-C1739ie? -- droxford
besides the fact that they are different sizes, probably the sound... w/ very few exceptions, the more expensive model within a specific brand will always sound better than the less expensive one (given that each has the proper current/voltage amp)
