Can a car insurance company jack up your rates for an accident you were in which you were not at fault? That is what AIG is trying to do to my mom. She was in a wreck in 2001 where another lady lost control of her vehicle and swerved into my mom. The police did not give my mom a ticket nor did Allstate (her company at the time) pay a claim. Anyway, that makes no sense to me that her rates would go up for something like that. I could totally understand if it was her fault. She just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I can't rationalize it. Am I wrong?
Actually, it's common practive to do this. It sucks but that's how it works. Their reasoning is you shouldn't put yourself in a position to get hit. Stupid huh? Just like how if you're a male then you pay more until 25 yrs of age. Some companies, I think Allstate (or whichever company has that actor who played president on Fox's 24 as spokesman), has policies to not raise rates on the first 1 or 2 accidents.
Just moved to AIG last week from Esurance but my policy will be effective starting next month. They saved me almost 200 for my 6month policy. My wife had a car accident 2 years back but it was the other party's fault, not hers. I explained that to them and still they didn't jacked up their initial quote.
Jackfruit, how come they just NOW raised the rate? Is it that you're asking about this just NOW, or that they raised the rate just now? Either way, I wonder why it took so long.
anything is fair game. Allstate wanted to raise MY rates b/c someone else on my policy was involved in an accident that was NOT their fault. i said, "**** you!" and changed companies that day AND got a better deal than i did before.
She applied for new car insurance with AIG and AIG is the one who is wanting to raise the rate. She was with Allstate before this and Allstate never raised the rate.
