I own a 1997 Ford F-150 and for the last month or so the odometer has been stuck on 143,279. Has this happened to anyone before? If so, what did you do to fix the problem? Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Mileage and speed are measured off the transmission. My 1994 Ford has a cable that goes into the side of the transmission. Perhaps your cable was broken or damage by road debris?

If you're lucky, maybe it will start going backwards.

Fix what problem? You haven't heard the old saying when it comes to odometers: If it's broke, don't fix it.

Does the speedometer work? I'm not sure where the signals are taken from, but IF the odo and speedo use the same signal source, then BOTH odo and speedo should be dead.

It's likely that there is a pulse sensor on the tail-housing of the transmission, and it's not sending the signal. Many cars use the ABS wheel speed sensor(s )for this purpose, but I'm not sure on your truck.

I recently wasted my time on a lot car, with a broken odo. I noticed it after it took forever to get it off the lot for a test drive.

Keep it for ten more years and sell it with that (many miles) on it. You'll get more for it. Then when he realizes that it doesn't work, and he got screwed when he though he got an old car with low miles, it'll be too late.
