Hey guys, My sister-in-law has finally decided to trade-in her '02 Honda CRV and get a new car (It has almost 100k on it but still in excellent mechanical condition, Hondas really are rock solid; she's asking for at least $9000 for it if you're interested). She's pretty much settled on a VW Jetta, and I wanted to get an idea from those 'in the know' about what kind of deal she can get on it and what would be a good deal. I know most of you think VW's suck, but that's completely besides the point because she likes it and thinks it's the 'perfect' car for her needs for the next few years or so (she will only keep it when it's under warranty, she doesn't drive that much anymore). The Wolfsburg Edition trim has an MSRP right around $20k and comes loaded with leather interior and a sunroof (and a heated driver seat, I believe). Any suggestions? Leave the "VW sucks" and horror stories aside, she doesn't care and she is set on this specific vehicle, so nothing you say will change anything (believe me, I tried). The reviews on edmunds.com are pretty upbeat: http://www.edmunds.com/new/2007/volkswagen/jetta/100831360/ratings_consumer.html It really is a great value for the money, it has tons of features standard on that particular trim, all for under $20k: http://www.vw.com/vwcom/content/objects/pdf/vw_jetta_wolfs_specs.pdf So, what kind of deal do you guys think she can get on this Jetta? Anyone here work for VW dealer in Houston or knows someone who does?
Just tell her to go for it. I have owned 3 VWs over the last 6 years. A 2000 golf, a 2003 Passat, and a 2006 GTI. The only problem i ever had was the fuel pump going out on the passat at 45,000 miles. Besides that, they have been great cars. The quality and craftsmanship of the car and the interior fit & finish are light years better than any Honda, Toyota, or American car. They have had some problems, reliability wise, with earlier models, but those are mostly due to all the electronic gadgets the cars contain. If you want a good deal, I suggest that she goes to Advantage VW off of 290 and eldridge and ask for Colin. Tell them that Nick with the A6 sent you. Contrary to other reviews about bad service at VW dealers, the people and service at Advantage are top notch. If you have any other questions about VW, feel free to ask me.
Are you talking about any specific bugs? Because VW has been using a 2.5 liter I-5 since they introduced the Eurovan in '93.
You should be able to get about 1k taken off the list price. Add the 10K in repairs, towing, and lost work time and it should cost her around 29K in the long run.
You can purchase VW's for invoice or near invoice. They know their vehicles do not sell well, so they don't waste your time playing games like the other dealerships. IF their not willing to negotiate, just tell them X dealer is offering this vehicle for $200 or $300 over invoice. Ask them to beat it and they will.
Heh! You're certainly welcome to, but considering that: 1) You would be preaching to the choir; and 2) She's set on the car she wants, and anyone else's opinion couldn't matter any less It becomes pointless. But you're welcome to get it outta your system if it helps.
Dude, my VW is a piece and I dread owning it. I DREAD it. It has let me down and left me stranded so many times. If you want your sister to go through that, be my guest. At least get her AAA. Oh, and my wife's best friend got a Wolfsberg edition. It was an even bigger heap than my car. At least my jetta was cheaper because it was a standard edition. When she is disappointed in it's absolutely crappy quality, don't be shocked.
I talked to my friend at advantage and he said that it would come out to about $23,000-23,500 with all the taxes and title.
She has a $21k driveout offer, but I am confident we can either get it down to $20k or get a few 'incentives' along with the current offer (e.g. free oil change, etc). I am pretty good at it, so no worries.
Okay.... is it weird that I've been driving a Toyota Rav4 for ten years (and ~122k miles)? It just occurred to me that, since I bought my Rav4 in 1997, you've gone through three VW's.
