I did not see a thread on this, and was wondering what everyone thought? It seems that he made some humorous tapes for his crew back in 2006, that discussed the dos and don'ts aboard the carrier.......and while the Navy at first supported him, now it seems his career is over. Seems to be a bit much for a guy that was just trying to lighten the mood of his shipmates. Link to article from CNN Thoughts? DD
You sound like fatty fat b*stard. "If you had a beer with me in real life you would understand me and know what a cool guy I am." Lame.
Ok, not sure how that pertains to what this topic is...but fine. Anyway, the point was that these videos were made as a morale boost for the men and women under his command, they were humorous sketches, and almost all of the troops are in favor of him. Not sure how this should end a career, seems to be a bit harsh to me. Like the media has nothing better to talk about and has latched on to something that is more than 3 years old. DD
It does not pertain to the topic, it pertains to your stupid defense of it. He is not an entertainer, nor is he some small-potatoes member of the ship's crew. Your own personal feelings about the content are totally irrelevant, as is any support from other members of the crew. You would not tolerate these sorts of "morale-boosting" videos from a CEO or from a upper echelon member of the State Department. So why is the Navy different? Given the Navy's less than optimal record in regards to the content - it seems particularly idiotic of the captain to not realize how potentially destructive the videos could be.
I think the seriousness of the issue is the fact that he was such a high ranking officer. Not quite the image, role model, or judgment that you would want to see from the 2nd in command of the USS Enterprise. Things being relative, if this was a lower echelon officer, it would still be inappropriate, but closer to your perspective of morale booster, etc.
I didn't realize it was impossible to make sailors laugh without using the word f** or doing jokes about gay guys meeting up in the showers etc. Plus it looks like even in the video itself you see that there had been some controversy before because the douchebag pilot on the couch with his shades on complains about people filing official complaints over previous videos. More than anything though, I don't see how that lightened the mood for anybody because this video was offensive.....to good comedy. It was so boring and lame.
it's true, I've only seen the representations of the videos that CNN has decided to show me, but using naked soldiers, men or female, in a shower together simulating sex acts, IN A TRAINING VIDEO ON WHAT NOT TO DO ON A NAVY SHIP, it seems like all shades of WRONG.
I think that is the main thing. As an XO Honors should've behaved more professionally. I watched the video on the Norfolk newspaper site and on it he says several times that neither the Admiral or the Captain know of them or have any input. He should've figured though if its not good for the Admiral or the Captain it problably isn't good for the XO. Watching the video it was about as risque as a PG-13 movie and a lot of it is self-depracating. He crosses the line with calling his SWO doppleganger anti-gay slurs and the same sex shower scenes which I think in light of DADT being repealed the military is probably very sensitive too at the moment. That said from what I have been reading Captain Honors otherwise is a fine officer. He deserves to be punished over this but hopefully this doesn't end his career.
A humourous vid put out by the XO and shown to 6000 crew. If shown in a different context to a different audience it might be OK. Seems harsh....but given his rank and who the vid was distributed to....had to do what they had to do...
I noticed that and he really should've known to stop after he got some complaints. A lot of the humor is in jokes in the Navy so they probably don't play that well without some context. Even then while Capt. Honors might be a good soldier a professional comedian he is not.
