Is it just me or was it lame to see Captain Filippes crying at the end? He went in to the situation with hope, survived, and came out of it with hope. The Somali's, not so much. Sick to my stomach of the media vilifying Somali Pirates. These guys are doing what they have to do to put bread in their stomach. They're forced into crime by being born into a ****ty ecosystem. And while we praise our own for being ambitious and wanting to make something out of nothing, we condemn the Somali's for doing the same based on their circumstances and taking away their fish. Can't help but wonder if people would see the hypocrisy if Somalia was a white nation.
I know! I mean, they're pirates, but they have a heart, too! How dare Hollywood vilify people who steal and board vessels they don't even own or have the rights to...?!?!? Ugh, Hollywood, you suck! Leave pirates alone!!!!
The Somali gentleman has no option. He can either 1. Fish 2. Smuggle Heroin via his anus into Europe 3. Pirate When option 1 is taken away by large tankers and consolidated fishing companies, they have to deviate from social norms to make it out alive. There's honor in piracy - these are the modern day Samurai. You put people into a corner and you invite the rules to be broken.
How dare you not defend pirates. I mean, all they have is their wooden leg and their weirdly-shaped hat with a feather sticking out and their Jolly Roger, man. How heartless can you be?!?? *bbbbaaakkk* Thank you, parrot, here's a grape. [thread potential increases]
It's Philips. And I think they humanized the pirates quite a bit in the film, showing they were the aggressors, kidnappers, killers....but were "victims" of their society. BTW...the other thread of yours looks to have failed to bait people into posting into it.....so grasping at straws with this one?
I went from 2 to 8 bars overnight 2 years ago, so I know what works. But it bores me. I'd rather post for me. These are my thoughts, my life .. and you're getting a ringside seat to the good stuff. Cherish it. Treasure the moment. Hug it, and hold it close. Pirates remind me of Jay-Z and a lot of rappers who sold drugs to make it out of the hood. Resourceful, talented and ambitious - but born on the wrong continent. You lot should see that instead of sympathizing with Captain Fillipe who doesn't have it anywhere near as bad as the Pirates.
I too like to show people my thoughts, my life... so... does anyone want to discuss how "La ♫ Cucaracha ♪ " paints roaches in a bad light?
I've met many people with advanced degrees that were born and raised in the hood. None of them resorted to crime to get out of the situation they were born into. Crime is an excuse, not a resource.
I've read a lot of reviews where people said they felt uncomfortable when the theatre burst into applause at Navy Seals putting bullets into the brains of desperate bandits. And that it was comical seeing a U.S. warship being used to track down a tiny, crapped out, minnow boat. It's like, yeah, I'm glad the hostages were rescued and all, but I don't think these Somali guys are pure evil. It's a sad and somber situation, not a superhero film.
Cheering when the Somalis were killed? Jacked up. Just like when AMC 30 crowd whooped and hollered when Denzel's character head-popped a dude on the street in "American Gangster". But I've learned to downplay expectations of movie audiences.
Did you watch the movie at all? the director clearly added some pity for the somalians. Added subtle hints throughout the movie about their hardships and how they can't go back and etc... or wait is this you being funny. u funny
They should have learned a thing or two from Captain Jack Sparrow. People always love the quirky and whimsical pirate, but the skinny ones with bad aim using a 7.62 rifle? Not so much.
