All the people who voted for Capriati were joking, right?

    a. $%@$%@$#%#% why did she have to win.

    b. why the **** does everyone i root for ****ing lose. oh, a number 1 seed hasn't won a grand slam in like 3 years. well, f4p is rooting for hingis so throw that out the window. oh hingis was up 4-0 in the second set. nevermind, f4p is rooting for her. hingis has 4 championship points. big deal, f4p is rooting for her.

    c. what the hell was up with everytime i watch capriati wins the points. i swear she had to win 80% of the points i watched. i had to keep turning it off just to give hingis a chance.

    d. how did capriati get so far down. i mean her power advantage is significant and that was obvious down the stretch. what the hell was she doing the rest of the match. on that note, how does hingis do so well. she obviously does not have close to the power of some of the women (davenport, williams sisters, capriati) yet still competes and sometimes wins.

    e. how did it end so fast? i turned the channel at 3-2 capriati and turned back no more than 5 minutes later and it was over. what happened?

damn i'm pissed. when hingis was good i hated her, now that i root for her she can't win a slam.

That was the best tennis match I've seen in a long, long time... the second set was absolutely spectacular. Thank goodness I was rooting for Jennifer!

    f4p,

Capriati got so far down because of terrible unforced errors. I know the stats may turn out to be relatively close in that area, but in the first two sets I can't begin to tell you how many times Jennifer had wide open shots down the baseline that just went wide. A couple of terrible calls, too.

Hingis succeeds cause she's just so damn good at returning serves. If she can do well on the initial return and get you trading groundstrokes, she's so accurate that she'll beat you the majority of the time. I guess a good comparison would be an NFL quarterback without a huge arm, but deadly accuracy. That was part of the reason Capriati didn't dominate early, but the other was poor decision making by Capriati. She really didn't get agressive and charge the ball until she absolutely had to, and it got her in a big hole. Yes, she dug out of it, but I wouldn't want to go to 4 championship points again. ;)

The match ended so fast because Hingis was completely worn out. You could see it in her body language when she hit a shot, and in her facial expressions. She didn't care anymore because of the fatigue. It was so hot that she just wanted to get out of there, and she mentally just lost her focus.

Yeah I missed the 5-1 part of set 1 and the 3-0 part of set 2 so I didn't see all the unforced errors. And even though I know Hingis' game is accuracy and keeping the points alive, the power disadvantage becomes so glaring on some points that I don't know how it stays so close. Even when she doesn't win majors, she usually knocks off at least one of the big hitters on the way to eventually losing.

And was it me or did neither of them seem to be taking many chances. So many points it would look like they could try to aim maybe a foot off the line to really get the point in their favor but both would usually just hit it midway between the midline and sideline. Maybe it was the heat.

Finally, I pretty much figured the match was over when it got to 5-5 in the second because I just couldn't a) see Hingis stopping the momentum or b) regaining enough composure to win. But I put myself through the torture of watching the last set. Still can't believe the last 3 games went so fast.

And finally Cat, you suck for getting to root for the winner. I wanted this one so bad. And how much does Hingis seem to own the Australian. 6 straight finals!! Damn, that's Bjorgian.

Capriati said it before the match
She said it would all come down to conditioning and she was right.
Martina just ran out of gas. Maybe she shouldn;t have played doubles as well in this tournee. I'll bet playing in that heat twice as much as Capriati was a factor in her fatigue. DOH!
    Incredible match though!
