How exactly do the Rockets sign Taylor, Norris and Anderson, assuming Taylor gets more than the exception thrown his way???

    Some help please!

Bull for 1 million. I think Shannon is renounced...and Mo gets all the scraps. Moochie then gets the Early bird special.

    What is our cap Jeff?

If it is $14.5m, then we can only give Taylor $4.5m after giving Dream $10m. Simple math, once you know what our cap is.

Moochie and Anderson can sign via Early Bird exceptions. They aren't an issue.

I think the Rockets cap is going to be around $13 million. I can't see Taylor taking a deal starting at $3M if Moochie and Shandon get deals starting at $4.5M.

Jeff, is $10M a set number?

How did you get the capspace number $13M? NIKE and I calculated $16M in space and Michael Murphy and Jon Rocket have been saying $17M~ lately (though I don't think that they take Eddie Griffin into account).

crispee, why isn't Shandon an issue? His unrenounced hit ties up capspace that could be directed towards Mo Taylor, does it not? Or are you just saying sign him w/ the MCE (which btw Jeff, the team will still have).

The question is:::: Jeff, is it $10 million??? I'm all ears. [IMG]

Note that Early Bird is max'd at $4.5m. It doesn't mean Moochie and Shandon get the max anymore more than a Full Bird gets the max. A middle class, on the otherhand, is for a set number, no negotiating.

Further, I never said Mo would have to sign for $3m on a $13m cap. He would sign for the Middle Class Excpetion at $4.5m.

Read my cyber-lips...Moochie is not going to get a $4.5 mil/season salary. That would be worse that the Cato fiasco, not saying that Moochie is as underacheiving and undermotivated as Cato, just that he doesn't deserve $4.5mil/season.

Achebe, I've always said that Shandon could be renounced and resigned with the MCE.

What I have never encountered, is someone saying the cap is $13m. I guess Jeff means that as an unrenounced Shandon.

The point is though, can we get Mo more than $4.5m. I guess you are saying, yes, but only if Shandon is renounced.

exactly crispee. I liked your earlier synopsis of the timing factors.

If we're right about the money... and about the amount that the Rockets can go under (b/c of the exceptions), I think a deal in which:

Dream signs for ~9 first year, for a 2 year $20m contract.
    Shandon is renounced.
Mo signs for the 8m average over 6 years (first year 6-7M).
    Shandon is signed to MCE.
Moochie is signed to some amount.
Bullard is signed to some amount.
Morris is signed to some amount.

Should be easily doable... particularly w/ starting Dream on a lower first year. Hell, the Rockets have more money than I thought.

    Now that's a summer!

And don't forget boys and girls, paybacks are funny! Some people like to wait to Christmas shop until 12/15. Some people like to lessen the #s of players per agent on their team.

Awww.. crap. Can Shandon be traded in the first year of an MCE w/ no bird rights?

    HP/Crisp - Achebe,
Doesn't Shandon have bird rights now? This is my understanding.

If so, will he sign the MCE w/no bird rights?

    Achebe,
per your previous thread we figured the cap at about $16.5 mil.

BTW when does the Maloney obligation expire? 2003 or 2004?

I still think Hakeem @ 10 for 2 is expensive and foolish.

My first priority is Mo T not Hakeem.

Of course my next priority is dumping Cato and Williams. When Williams goes next year do we loose his cap room because of us going over this year with larger contracts? Or do we just sign Bull, Langhi, Mooch and SA for 1 yr. deals. Personally I want Langhi and Mooch locked up for more than 1 yr.

    Thoughts?

Rocket!!, crispee's timing takes into account maximization of the FA capspace. In this situation, you would want to pay Mo more than Shandon. To do so, you can renounce Shandon, w/ the understanding that you'd sign him to an MCE later. Renouncing Shandon would get you ~6-7 mil if Dream signs for $10m

BTW, Dream for $10m isn't a bad idea, if you're trying to keep Falk in check.

    Achebe,
Thanks, I'm down with that, but that still does not answer my other questions.

FYI Fagen not Falk. I know that was just a miscue....no bashing intended.

Will Shandon relinquish his bird rights?
    I don't think he has a choice.

    ROCKET!!!

Shandon does not have Full Bird rights, just Early Bird. Early Bird is max'd out at league average salary, and the MCE is defined as "league average salary."

Early Bird and MCE are essentially the same. The only difference is that Early Bird can be for *less*, whereass MCE is for average pay, no more, no less. Shandon wouldn't care either way.

It real easy. We can resign all of our own players, and still give Dream $10.0, only one realistic way - we don't go under the cap. Right now, since we are over the cap, we have a MCE. If we go more than $4.5 million under the cap, we lose the MCE. So we sign Mo for the $4.5 MCE, SA for an early bird, and Moochie for an early bird. We then sign Dream for the $10.0 million, because he has bird rights and this is less than what we paid him last year.

My guess is that we give Mo a three year deal, with an opt out after two. When he opts out after two, he has full bird rights. This is the type of same deal Rashard Lewis did with Seattle (although he used early bird instead of MCE).

If we sign SA to a two year deal, then we have tons of cap space in summer 2003 (right when Duncan is a free agent). Especially if we get Francis to agree to wait on his max deal until after we have signed the big dollar free agent.

Not true. We have to go below the cap by the sum of all our exceptions to lose any one of them, including the Drew trade exception.

    This is around $7m.

You are correct. Of course, we do not go under the cap at all if we sign Dream last.

My numbers say we have 15.8 mill in cap space if we renounce everyone/thing except Moochie. So if we don't renounce Shandon that'd number become 12.94 for Mo and Hakeem, if we try to fit things without the use of MCE. That means, the only way we can give Mo more than MCE while resigning Hakeem and Dream is if Dream took only 8 mill as a base.

If Dream's base is 10 mill, we'd have to renounce Shandon to get Mo above MCE.

Achebe-If you renounce Shandon to get more cap space for Mo, you'd have to renounce your exceptions as well to get far enough under for Mo. Either the MCE will be used on Mo, or renounced. If you renounce everything to get under the cap, once you go back up, the only thing you could sign players for is at the league minimum, or players whose bird rights you still have.
