The NBA has a real scandal that is about to blow, and Scott Padgett has the skinny: The Jazz has been cheating for years, he says. "They overinflate the balls," the Nets forward said. "They have an offense geared toward the layup, so they want your jumpers bouncing out," he explained. "The whole time I was there (1999-2003), the balls were hard. I'm gone now, and the balls are still too hard. They overinflate them, I'm telling you." -- Newark Star-Ledger

NBA teams have been known to use tactics such as these for years. For instance many fast breaking teams have used (not sure if this still happens) nets that are much wider and allow the ball to come through much quicker where as teams who like to walk the ball up and run an offense will have a much narrower net.

Whatever it takes. I know that the United Center was known to have the tightest rims in the association. Shooters would get no friendly bounces there.

    He said hard balls.

This is a pretty big allegation by Padgett, I bet Sloan is airing out some of the basketballs as we speak.

Weren't there rumors in the 80s of Celtics doing similar things? Things like tightening the rims for the opposing team for one half, then switching them around when the second half would start? I personally love rumors like these where you actually believe the home team is really getting home court advantage.

    I think so.

I heard similar rumors in the 1950's/1960's, the Celtics would supposedly just pay the other team off in the finals... which would explain how they shut some teams out I suppose.

I wish I could say that this is Karma for cheating us out of the finals in '97, but it's not enough for me to be satisfied.

ummm i figured all this could be prevented by checking balls and rims just before the game?

Interesting...are the Rockets doing anything to gain a similar advantage at home? Apparently not, judging by our record 2 years running...

    With regard to Boston,

In the old Boston Garden they air conditioned the home locker room but not the visitor's one. In June it's can be hot, even in Boston. Pat Riley and the Lakers in the 80's once complained about no air conditioning, when hot weather hit Boston during the finals.

Before the next game there was an air conditioner, boxed up and shrink-wrapped, sitting on a pallet in the middle of the Lakers locker room.

Hey, you asked for an air conditioner. You didn't say we had to install it!
