http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1985653 Jose Canseco has apparently written a book, and in it it states that he personally injected Mark McGwire with steroids, and also that he saw McGwire and Giambi inject each other. He also says he introduced Rafael Palmeiro, Ivan Rodriguez and Juan Gonzalez to steroids when he was with the Rangers. Also goes on to add that President Bush (who owned the team then) had to have known about the steroid use (I hope I don't need to move this to the D&D). What do you think -- guy making a quick buck with a book, or truth?
Not at all surprising - baseball didn't test for it, of course they used steroids - I would have too. It's like taking a drug without a prescription - is that even a crime in most states? I know you're not supposed to do it, but....
Exactly... and the supplement he did admit to taking, Androsteindione... is a very potent steroid-precursor (it gets converted to testosterone by the body), and it is now illegal in all the other professional sports. So, even the thing he admitted to taking was basically a form of juicing... and I'm pretty sure he hid other things. Of course, Canseco has been known to "embellish" from time to time... but its hillarious seeing my STL friends refuse to believe any of this, claiming Jose to just be trying to sell copies of his book.
I guess Roger Maris' hr single season record really is intact. Everyone above him needs an asterisk for steriod use.
If anybody reads the NY Daily News story - he denies banging Madonna too. www.nydailynews.com It also says that the tone of the book is that he is unapologetic, and thinks that they should be legal - etc
So how long 'till we hear from McGwire, Gonzalez and Rodriguez? Soon I hope. I can't wait to hear them call Canseco a liar. What I want to know, however, is why Canseco had to inject McGwire? Was he too scared to do it himself? Me thinks there is a story there.
Giambi's agent already called him a liar - problem is that Giambi has already testified under oath that he took steroids.
well if you want to consider andro steroiods then i guess he used them. i don't think mcguire shot up or anything, but it really isn't much difference between andro and steroids. i think this book is a bunch of crap. come on...jose having to inject mark?? and the part where he starts name dropping with bush just make it sound even more sensational.
While i'm sure McGwire probably took steroids, this is just a money ploy. Just a few months ago Canseco was auctioning off a "Spend a day at my house" prize on ebay.
Sure it's a ploy to make money. But that doesn't mean its false. If he's just making up lies, they can sue him.
I think Im part of the minority that believes that steroids doesnt have that much of an impact on HR numbers. Hitting a ball far isnt directly proportional to how much power you put in a swing. Just like golf. However, in baseball, the biggest thing is hand eye coordination, hitting the ball on the perfect part of the bat. Steroids gets you stronger, but if you dont have the ability, it does nothing for you. Just ask Gary Sheffield.
Now imagine every fly ball you see a guy like Baggs hit goes another fifty feet. I doubt it makes you get a much better average except for the fact every pop fly out becomes a potential home run. Steriods makes a big difference.
