Why was the Canadian anthem sung at the AS game? Is it a common thing, since the NBA is in Canada? I've never noticed it being sung before.
When the Raptors play here in Houston they play both anthem and the same for when the Rockets play in Toronto. Edit:It happens at all games when a Canadian team is playing. (MLB too, I think)
I'm not being unpatriotic or anything... but I truly think the Canadian anthem rocks. The Star Spangled Banner is great... but I always get some chills whenever I hear a well-sung version of "Oh, Canada"... and I'm not canadian, nor do I have any clue what "we stand on guard for thee" really means... thus, its a good song. Maybe its because too many people end up butchering the US one, and adding their own (awful) rendition of it...
the canadian anthem started to be sung at nba events since toronto and then vancouver entereted the league. its played at the league events like the asg game and played whenever the canadian team is either the host or visiting team.
Me too! The Canadian anthem is the very same melody as my high school's alma matre. Even all these year's later, I find it very moving. Oh, and Ohio State stole our Fight Song!
Was I the only one that thought that Air Force Academy’s Cadet Chorale (sopranoes) were terrible while singing the anthem this weekend? And I always like the standard reniditions so much better than the recording artists' "bells and whistles" ones. Evan
My wife is Canadian so I always pay attention when it is sung. They always sing the Candian anthem when a team is playing. In this case, it must be because Steve Nasty was playing. BTW, the Canadian anthem is usually very boring. My wife always comments how sad it is to hear both anthems sung together because the US one is always stronger. Not this time. The rendition at the allstar game is undoubtedly the best rendition I have ever heard. It blew the US athem out of the water (only because it was sung by the military and not a solo artist). My wife wrote the artists name down and we probably will be purchasing her CD.
the only song that really truly makes me feel alive. when the canucks national anthem singer Mark Donnelly holds the microphone to the crowd, that's the greatest moment in anthem singing anywhere. --- "(A producer) with Hockey Night in Canada suggested I hold out the microphone to the crowd," he says. "I told him that Vancouver audiences usually don't sing that well, so he left it up to me - and my intention was not to do it. This was against Detroit, so I'm out there and I realize that yeah, a few people are singing the first few lines. So I gave it a shot." The crowd, pumped for the playoffs, grew louder on cue. "I thought, 'Wow, they're actually paying attention!' And the next game, the crowd seemed a bit prepared for it. It was much louder, and has been every game since. It's been great." --- a true canuck tradition - and one of the greatest/loudest moments in sports anthem singing.
The American anthem promotes conquering through war, whilst the Canada one promotes peace and highlight's it's countries beauty. They both personify their respective nations, well.
Uh, conquering? The anthem was written about a battle in the War of 1812, fought on American soil against an invader (England). There was no "conquering" going on. Maybe you could check out the words sometime. Personally I think both songs are overblown tripe, but then nobody asked me.
The war of 1812 involves in the US's attempt to conquer Canada(how ironic). Isn't that a conquering act? Building like the White House were burned by the British, because of similar act by the US forces in Toronto. BTW, I like the US anthem better. It's just more beautiful than the Canadian one.
The 610 radio guy, (a new voice, I'm not sure of the name) brought that up today. He mentioned that he thought it was sung because of Steve Nash. He then adds that Yao's anthem wasn't sung, nor was Manu's......... ......or maybe it was Matt Jackson who mentioned it......
