Canada Suspends Aid To Palestinian Authority

TORONTO (AP)--Canada announced Wednesday that it was suspending assistance to the Palestinian Authority because the new Hamas-led government refuses to renounce violence and recognize Israel.

Hamas formally took power Wednesday, with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas swearing in its 24-member Cabinet, including 14 ministers who served time in Israeli prisons. Hamas and new Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh insist they won't soften the militant group's violent ideology or formally recognize its longtime nemesis.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay said in a statement that Canada therefore had no choice but to suspend assistance and decline any contact with the new Hamas Cabinet.

    Hayes,you are obsessed.

Actually, apparently Canada at present thinks something is more important than recognizing that democratic result.

There. Is that so hard to admit the obvious? No it is not. No need for pages and pages of parsing to try to confuse things. :)

That being said, I think this is a counterproductive move by the Canadian government.

Look, if a terrorist run organization comes into power, regardless of whether the people elected it or not.....other governments are free to renounce that government, and CERTAINLY not give them any monetary support.

Exactly! We don't have to support every idiot that a group of people vote into power.

    Well duh.

Many governments are also free to renounce the government of Israel and in fact have done so.

Hamas is engaged in a violent struggle and employs terrorism with a state , Israel, that engages in much voilence and employs terror to steal Palesinian land that they have occupied for 35 something years in deficance of the UN Charter, international law and virtual unanimous world opinion.

Israel democratically elects governments who continue the terror from their side and now we see the Palestinians democratically electing a government who is doing the same thing. Of course, given the disparity in force, the Israelis always kill more Palestinians, than vice versa.

Both sides need to cut the crap and negotiate with each other whether the other is being violent or not. Labeling one side terorist or violent while pretending the other is not does not help reslove the problem even though it might give one side a temporary pr edge, as Israel enjoys in the US,if not hardly anywhere else in the world.

Israel at the moment thinks they can just declare their occupation of the most desireable Palestinian land permanent and not negotiate. They have essentially tried that for 35 years. The only difference is they have built a wall on Palestinian land. to try to shut most of them out.

This will certainly continue the violence.

I can't believe I am saying this -- and don't get used to it -- but I actually agree with DaDa on this one.

No state is bound to continue providing aid to the Palestinians or anyone else for that matter. So it's their prerogative...

However, it's a mistake and it will prove to be counterproductive down the line. The void that will be created will only allow the hard-line, unfriendly regimes in the region to step in and flood the Palestinians with the money they need, convincing them that the 'West is your enemy, they want to starve you to death if they can until you oblige and give into their demands of surrendering to the Israeli occupier and stopping the resistance'.

Make no mistake about it: the Iranians and Saudis will up the ante and will compete against one another as to whom can provide the most aid to the Palestinians. All this is going to do is end any kind of leverage we have with the Palestinians, and it will prove to them and everyone in the region (Arab world, Muslim world at large) that America and the West are nothing more than hypocrites, they only want democracy on their own terms.

HayesStreet himself doesn't even take his own thread seriously. He hasn't bothered to respond once.

    Great thread.
