I posted earlier about my computer having a virus .... well for some reason it won't let me do anything, I couldnt get into safe mode to run the malawerbytes anti-malware I downloaded from another computer. Anyway I just did a complete install of Window XP Professional, and I was wondering since my school offers us a free "upgrade" download of Window 7 from a site. Could I upgrade my Window XP with it? or could you only do it with Vista?
You have to do a clean install, but I think Microsoft is fine with that if you are concerned about the license.
U can upgrade from XP, its just going to be a fresh install, id go through microsofts website and run the compatibility test on your XP machine I've upgraded my netbook to 7 from XP and works flawlessly since I installed it back in Nov
I went from XP to Win7 recently. It's just a clean install. Worth it, but I would recommend disabling UAC right away because it's so irritating.
So since I just re-installed my WINDOW XP PROFESSIONAL and got rid of the virus and is a clean system now. I should just download the WINDOW 7 upgrade from the school website? and let it run? or do I have to burn it out? I will give me a 1 time license. thanks,
you know, you really could have continued this in your other thread. now, for your answer....You have a fully functional XP system and you want to upgrade to 7? yes, pop the disc in your drive, then when it popsup with the install screen, jsut do it. By the by...you can install a upgrade copy of Vista/Win7 on a clean drive, you just have to ignore the part where it asks for the license (you basically tell it you will enter the license key and activate later) and then finish the install. Then when you boot into your new un-activated operating system, run the install from within windows adn enter the correct license key on the second install. It takes a little extra time, but it works effectively and allows you to use a upgrade version on a clean drive.
I just re-installed Window XP Professional and all the drivers ... motherboards, video card, audio ... everything works ok but in the Device Manager I have a yellow question mark on "USB Device" All my USB port works ... and I tried uninstalling it and even disable it .. but everytime I reboot the computer it pops up "new hardware found"
What do you have plugged in to your USB slots? Could be that you need to download drivers for an mp3 player, printer, etc.
go here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor to check to see if your good to upgrade it i was able to upgrade CD by getting it for like $35 when they had the upgrade special last summer, since its a netbook with no CD/DVD Rom, i ripped it as an .iso file then ran it with Virtual Clone Drive, and installed within 30 mins
Then... it's not an upgrade. You cannot purchase and use the "upgrade" software that Microsoft sells. If you have XP and not Vista, you must buy the full version.
I really don't, either. But the box I have clearly says "Upgrade designed for Windows Vista" on the top corner of the package. On the back it says, "This version of Win7 if designed as an upgrade for Windows Vista. If you are upgrading from Windows XP, you will need to back up your files and settings, perform a clean install and then re-install your existing files, settings, and programs." Anyway, it comes with the 32 and 64-bit discs, and they both work for XP users.
Because some people don't have xp or vista or they are buying a new machine and want to start from scratch. You can buy the upgrade version if you are upgrading from xp or vista. With Vista you put the upgrade disk in and let it go it will do everything for you. For XP it will make you do a fresh install and you will have to verify that you have a functional XP key. Once you do that it will work without a problem. I have upgraded both types of systems and have had 0 problems either way. It also doesn't matter what flavor you upgrade. You can upgrade a home version up to a Ultimate version as long as you purchase the correct version of 7.
My reply earlier told how to use a upgrade copy on a fresh install. Mic and Dave are further proof. MS doesnt want you to do it, but it is doable without a lot of hassle.
