A friend of my son's wants to escape College Station. He thinks he can't transfer to UT without 3.5 as A & M isn't one of the feeder schools. Is this true? Has finished 1 semester. 3.2 average. 1320 SAT if that means anything after 1 semester of college. Lower half of his highschool class, which is why he wound up in this predicament.
In order to transfer to the UT at Austin, a student must have completed at least 24 semester hours(or the equivalent) of transferable credit. This is regardless of GPA. He could always apply for admittance as a freshmen and see what course work he could transfer. I don't know the specifics of this. Assuming he has no AP credits, the easiest way to accomplish his goals would be a semester in JuCo or community college.
I don't see why not, as long as he has the credit hours. Of course, if he's trying to get into like the business school or something, that could be a problem.
Keep in mind that it's MUCH harder to transfer into UT than to gain admission out of high school. Business, engineering, and communications all have selective admission, so his best bet is to apply for liberal arts then later move into one of the aforementioned areas. Texas' enrollment was just over 50,000 students last fall, which is about 2,000 more than President Faulkner wants. So, until the top-10% rule is done away with, you'll continue to see tough transfer requirements.
I am currently in the middle of the process, I was at Tulane last semester and could not stand another semester in New Orleans and in that environment, so i am at a community college this semester and then will go into A&M in the fall, i got a 1370 on my SATs, a 3.9 at Tulane, and other stuff, just did not have the required 24 hours (AP hours dont count in that unless they are graded, and most universities dont), so it is a difficult thing to decide to do, especially for me as i never thought i would go to a community college, he just has to keep his mind on the prize at the end and it will be ok....

Because for a long time i wanted to go to UT, got into high school, my values and morals sort of changed, and now want to go to a school that more accuratley reflects those values, nothin against UT, its a great school, A&M is just more Conservative and Christian then UT, and i fit in better at A&M, and i never got around changin the user name and probly ever wont
No advice but I'll contribute my profile to give ya an idea of what it was like for me transferring... Graduated from a mediocore Louisiana high school in 2002 with a 3.5 GPA. 28 ACT score. 1230 SAT. In the top 20% of my Class (not that it mattered). Rejected from A&M. Attended UH with scholarship for a year for the '02-'03 year, 3.79 first semester, 3.56 second, 3.67 overall. Got In-State Status. Accepted into UT School of Natural Sciences for Computer Science for the '03-'04 year. Was allowed to transfer into Electrical Engineering before the year started (for some strange reason, still not sure why they let me).
Alright, first of all, I am not writing an English paper when i type on here, so get off it. Second of all, i could go to UT or back to Tulane, so do not make it sound like the only reason i am going into A&M, is because i could not get into any "better" school academic wise. Thanks Guys.
makes no sense if u could go to UT now like you say but ud rather go to a community college just to got to A&M or back to tulane?? im biased but UT is definately a better education compared to any of those choices....
Yeah...I don't want to make it seem like we're all piling on, but I don't really get it. Conservative? Yes, but "more...Christian?" You, my friend, are not going to Baylor. A&M is not exactly a saintly institution. Your values changed, so you attended Tulane? In New Orleans, Sin City southern branch? Your choice, but I just find your reasoning sort of annoying. Living in East Texas, I've heard the "found God" reasoning for this before(Apparently, also a valid reason for becoming a republican).
If your son's friend wants to survive in a big state school, he should learn the value of independence and look up this information for himself. Everything is on their website, Further, he could show initiative and email/call someone in the admissions office with any additional questions.
I had a friend playing baseball at Southwestern in Georgetown. The school 30 minutes from Austin... He was admitted to for the summer session and fall after the first semester of his freshman year. He had a 3.3GPR.
Wow, by three whole spots. Do you think that matters? Are U.S. News' rankings that important, that a difference of three spots in their convoluted rating system would influence someone's choice? And where did Tulane rate in The Times of London's rankings...?
That ranking seems pretty messed up to me. I don't know anyone that would consider Ut to be top 15 in the nation let alone in the world
