Go to arin.net and they will resolve the IP to his ISP.

    http://www.arin.net/tools/index.html

You could also try and be sneaky and do a

START - RUN - \\XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX\c$ where xxx is the IP number

Some people leave their machines wide open and you can jump right on their hard drive via the admin share(c$). Then just "browse" his drive....

It really depends on the OS. The older Win98 and WinMe machines are the easiest to access that way.

The safest bet is to get a firewall, especially if you are always on like a Cable or DSL connection.

I was able to hit several machines on the same segment as me on my DSL. I didn't mess with their systems though, I'm not a hacker...

Also, one of the main flaws is that their "Administrator" account has a blank password on it.

A few weeks back I asked what IP:Logged was on the bottom of each post...i didn't get a chance to check the answer...

what is it??? when I click on it, it says I can't access it.

I think the message board logs the IP addresses of every post, but they are only accessible by admins.

    Go to:

    www.grc.com

They have a couple of utilities run via their website that test how vulnerable you are to 'hackers'. Specifically, click on 'Shields Up'. From there, click on 'Test My Shields' and then 'Probe My Ports'.

thanks to Wink3Cat5's post, EVERYONE should get the free version of ZONEALARM!!! seriously.

My Linksys router acts as a firewall and just for the hell of it, I have ZA running also...

you can never be too safe.

Yeah - that's why it is only for educational purposes.

I use this method at work all the time, so it has a legal purpose.
