In a little road rage incident yesterday I was challenged to a fight on the side of the road, "Pull over MF!" You know the drill.

I started to flash back to Jr high when I got my ass kicked after shaking an etch-a-sketch by accident, but then realized that I had been a cop and had all these "moves" at my disposal.

The truck positioned itself to pull into a gas station, I reluctantly followed but apparantly the guy changed his mind and just pulled away shooting me the finger.

I yelled a few expletives, leaned back and did the cool one-handed steering wheel turn as I U-turned in the intersection possibly avoiding an embarrassing situation.

I think I can fight, but would rather not...

Interesting question for two men in their 30's.

    Can I fight? Yes.

Will I win? That's the question.

I have learned that if you stand up to someone behaving like this, they'll typically back down, though.

The last fight I (almost) got into was at a Living Colour concert in 1988. Some guy pushed me trying to get closer to the stage so I pushed him back.

It was only then that I realized how big he was....

By this time, everyone was watching us, so I couldn't back down. I just gave him a dirty look and prayed that he'd just walk away. He pointed his finger at me and walked away. I nodded my head like "yeah, you BETTER walk away" but inside I had never been more relieved in my life.

People are wuss now days. Everytime there's a fight, someone is going to pull a gun out. I miss the good old days when all it invovles are bare fists and baseball bats.

I can't fight at all, despite having trained for a few years with people who can.

Anyway, Phil Nurse, the head of the school where I've gone, can indeed fight. he's 40 now but he's a former WW euroopean champ in muay thai and kickboxing. He's about 5-9 150 now but has been training and fighting boxing and muay thai for about 30 years non-stop and is still in tremendous condition; he's strong as an ox and cat-quick relative to pretty much 99.999% of the population. He could chop down a street sign with his shins. When he hits the pads, if you hold them, there's a good chance he will knock you over.

He gives the following advice for the most important move of any streetfight:

And he's right. It's just not worth it, ever.

you ask like it wouldn't work.

whenever i get in a tussle, i always challenge the other guy to a "jump off" competition. it's a safe way of handling beef.

    loser buys the beer.

I got a better one than that, AB.

I was actually pulled out of my car during a road rage incident a year ago.

The dude spit in my face and shoved me up against my car.

I pointed to the "Jesus is my Savior" bumper sticker on his car and asked him if that was how Jesus taught him to behave.

He then started swearing at me and mentioned he was a cop.

    I said "prove it".

He pulled out his wallet and flashed an ID card. It was a green and yellow ID card for someone who is out on parole. I laughed at him.

He then told me to "meet him in that parking lot over there" so he could beat me up.

I said "sure thing, pal". What a maroon.

As we were waiting at the stoplight to turn into the parking lot, I called 911 on my cellphone and gave them his license plate number. I then went down to the police station and filed a report.

Two days later, he was picked up and charged with assault. I picked him out of a lineup. He pled guilty, did 45 days in county jail, and paid me restitution for the "damage" to my car when he shoved me up against it.

Road rage incidents just aren't worth it, especially in a state where you can legally carry a concealed firearm. Nowadays, if someone tries to get my attention on the road, I ignore them no matter what.

    That's awesome, RMT!!!!

If a moderately-sized guy attacked me, I could defend myself enough to get away (really, all you have to do is...when he comes flailing stupid fists at you, squat down and give him a hard kick to a knee. He'll go down like a sack of potatos).

But if it was more than one person, or one really big guy, or somebody with a weapon... nah. I try to be very careful to avoid placing myself in such situations.

This guy was almost double my size....horizontally not vertically.

I'm not as thin as Twiggy, but I'm not a heifer either.

I'll bet he was 5'7", and 250 freaking pounds. A widebody with gang tattoos.

When you are outsized, the goal is to keep the person from destroying you.

There is no such thing as a fair fight. All body parts are fair game.

Low kick is a great weapon if you're fighting a several round kick-boxing match, especially against a Tae Kwan Do person or Boxer who doesn't train to defend them.

On the street it has less value in a 30 second confrontation. Also, squatting down in any fight is a good recipe for getting smacked/kneed/punted in the face - not advisable.

well, if you're kicking low (like, to the knee) you're already gonna naturally squat a little. Just exaggerate that a bit to make it harder for him to get a punch in.

Well, I'm only referring the stupid, "I'm gonna throw a bunch of punches at you" fighter who doesn't think to defend himself much and doesn't think about any other kind of attack. Seems to me that that's how most people want to fight.

And, you're right - it certainly doesn't work at closer distances. But, as I said, if someone's gonna walk at me with stupid-fighter flailing fists, the knee kick is a decent solution.

Anybody got stories about fighting someone you actually know that pissed you off? I think most guys natural action when another man REALLY pisses them off is to want to fight. How do you handle that?

Well, I pissed a guy off in college once. I coulda taken him, too, but he got three of his frat buddies to hold me down. Even then, he didn't get a decent shot in.

    friggin' pu$$y.

Then there was this time when I kicked this guy's ass. his name was Kimbo or something... ;)
