Just wondering if we can do that, and if so how much does it end up costing if you access the internet w/o the plan?

Im pretty sure that if you are with AT&T, you have to get the data plan with the 2 year agreement.

Yeah I'm with AT&T. So I guess that means you can't? I just got another phone (Samsung) which had a $10 monthly data plan that I chose not to pay for.

I don't understand why you would want an iphone without the data plan, unless you have the tzones hack.

if you're buying the phone from AT&T then yes you are required to buy the data plan. Tmobile made this a requirement as well with the blackberrys. The only way is to buy the iphone online or from someone other than at&t and plug in your sim card

It's actually for my wife. She doesn't use the internet. She likes using the apps though. I don't want to get the itouch either.

Just go buy the iphone from a second hand retailer (ebay, craigslist, etc) and stick your sim card in there. It will work fine. And you can use your houses wifi internet connection for free. (Or any other wifi connection for free)

I think that most of the interesting apps other than games use the internet.

IF you purchase a new phone, yes.

If you get a new one from ebay, you have to get a data plan to use the phone on AT&T, but you don't have to get a contract.

And there is no such thing as an itouch. I want to choke anyone who says it; it's like nails on a chalkboard.

I have the same issue. My wife uses the apps but not the internet. :(

At $30 per phone and with hers and mine, that's already $60 right there. It's expensive.:(

One thing about the apps is that it uses the internet to download them, so there's no way around getting apps without internet, unless you can rig adding the apps another way.

I think I use the Internet feature more than she does, but she does use it seldom.

Can get/use the apps through Wi-Fi. Can also transfer apps form iTunes to your iPhone.

Yup, a friend of mine had some apps on a smart phone and did away with the data plan. Then got a $300+ bill the next month because some of the apps were always connecting to the Internet. He went ahead and added the data plan back.

Early 2008 ATT sold refurb'd units without the plan for 150. I was able to buy one even though I had no account with them. You can get apps without the data plan, it does have wifi.

That's BS. All I needed to tell them was that I wasn't impressed with the speed of the Internet. (I live in an area without 3G). As for why would anyone want an IPhone without a data plan? In any major you're going to find Wi-Fi nearly everywhere. Most of the applications don't require a connection anyway, unless you're a douchebag business type who needs to check E-Mail every 13.2 seconds.

I pay $40 a month with 200 texts. Still getting a 22% discount from old job though.

Wi-Fi does not use the data plan from AT&T. It uses whatever wireless internet network you are connected to.
