CARTOSAT-1 launched CARTOSAT-1 a high-tech mapping satellite, was launched by India's space agency on Thursday. CARTOSAT-1 has the ability to track every house and street in the nation of over a billion people. Reuters reports this move signals an advanced effort by India to get into the lucrative business of satellite launch services and using space technology for rural and urban development. India aims to use CARTOSAT-1 to help urban and rural planning, land and water management, relief operations and environmental assessments. CARTOSAT-1 carries two panchromatic cameras that take black and white stereoscopic pictures in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The imageries will have a spatial resolution of 2.5 metre and cover a swath of 30 km . CARTOSAT-1 can take photos of cars on the ground, though not their number plates. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PSLV-6, blasted off at 10:14 a.m. (0444 GMT), carrying the 1.5 ton(3,300 lbs) satellite from the spaceport village of Sriharikota, some 100 km (62 miles) north of southern Madras city on the Bay of Bengal coast.
Doesn't the United States have satellites that can read the date on a dime laying on the ground from outer space? I'm sure India is decades behind the rest of the world in this technology.
not if the dime is turned upside down. India is probably just 10-15 years behind. But considering that means they are as advanced as us in the 1990s, there aren't that far behind. i.e. look out USA, there's another country you have to think about.
Does anyone else get phone calls from cable companies, phone companies, people selling stuff....etc after you get home from work? It's like they know when you get home. How long will it be before every baby born is stamped with an ID number?
I wouldn't be surprised, I remember my history prof. saying that the U2 spy planes could do the same thing, only not from outer space.
Ummm, right. India took a major step backwards with their last election. They lack very basic things like adequate infrastructure for things like water distribution and especially reliable power distribution. They do have a lot of engineers and call center operators who will work for cheap, though! I like that!
lol. Well Bobo, I'm guessing most people are at work from 9-5, so they call after 5-6. Well, at least that's what I'd do anyway. And as for the ability to track a house, that's nothing. You can get satellite images of your house lot from several aerial satellite services. My county's appraisal district website has included this functionality now. This isn't anything new.
Yet they can build a nuke. The reason is because their society's wealth is highly polarized. There's the very rich and the rest are poor.
yep, and still tons of towns yet to get electricity, many large cities still have hours per day that are in the dark, and water comes to some houses for an hour a day every other day.
I don't understand your point here. Wasn't the lack of basic things *one of the main reasons* for the outcome of the last election? The way I understand it (and I'm not an expert, but I'm sure you're not either), the BJP, which lost power, was considered too extremist (Hindu nationalists) and that their economic reforms had "left too many people behind". The Congress Party now in place plans to continue economic reforms while ensuring that prosperity moves to the countryside (whatever that means). So bigtexxx, what exactly makes you say what you did?
