Last night Yao received a pass at the top of the 3pt rainbow. He faked as if he was going to shoot and the fans in Phoenix were kind of excited when they sait but Yao immediately pass the ball. I remember last time in his rookie days, he was set by Steve where he drove to the basket and pass the ball out to Yao at the line and took his first 3pt attempt and made it. It was against the Lakers I believe. Does he have a license to shoot 3s? Does he practice shooting 3s? any insider info? Thanks.
I dunno. But lets reflect on my favorite Rockets big man 3. Rockets vs Hawks towards the end of the big 3 era. Hawks were horrible that year but whooping us. I think they had only 4 turnovers all game. We were down. It was ugly. But we started mounting an Olajuwon fueled comeback in the 4th. He gets the ball at the 3pt arc and doesn't shoot despite Calvin screaming "shoot it big fella". A few possessions later they still leave Hakeem open at the top of the 3. He shoots it. Makes it. Hawks call TO.
Yao should not take 3's. Why take 3's when you have so many players who are more than capable of hitting them? He's only made 1 3pt shot in his career, which is the one I think you're talking about during his rookie campaign. He's 1/7 for 14.3% I'm no insider but I don't think Adelman would be thrilled with Yao taking 3's. His special go-to move is the turnaround fade-away and I'd rather see him do those than 3's.
Yao said in an interview that Adelman gave him the green light to shoot threes. Yao said that he isn't quite as confident in his range just yet. Maybe we will see some later in the season.
My Fav Big Man 3 had to be Hakeem's at the against the Knicks in the finals towards the end of the game. It was icing on the cake. Back to the topic at hand, I don't think Yao should be shooting three. Although, I also noticed the crowd get vocal when they saw Yao wide open for 3. They probably wanted to see what else our big man can do.
Of those 5, have been last second desperation shots over the years. And I think I remember the other 1 being a half court shot before the end of a quarter. None were open shots within the normal flow of the offense. The only one which was in the flow of the offense was Steve Francis dribbling base line into the paint and then whipping a pass over his right shoulder that bounces all the way out to the three point line to a wide open Yao...who drills it.
I disagree. Yao is capable of making 3's. correct me if i'm wrong, but among those 1 for 7, i think 5 of them comes from half court heaves. If he is in rhythm and nobody is guarding him and there's less than 6 seconds on the shot clock, then perhaps he should take it.
I just realized that the way Yao shoots the ball, he uses his wrist. It's effective for short range shots. I haven't see people taking long shots wighout elbow motion.
If we have Yao shooting 3's that would be Yao is not in his normal position, which is down low. This could mean that our offense isn't going the way it's supposed to. He's more efficient doing the turn around jumpers. As much as it would thrill me to see Yao make 3's.. but realistically, we're much better off playing our inside-outside game with Yao in the inside.
Yao could have when he was a rookie, but I doubt he practices shots from that range anymore because he is using his size to shoot closer in. I know he could shoot the old college 3.
It was when the rockets were playing the warriors that yao shoot that 3!!! A moment i will never forget...
Yao's not dumb. He knows he has a green light to shoot threes, but he also knows that there's a right time and place to do it. When you're playing against a strong competitor, in their house, in a tight game where every bucket counts, having him attempt a three is a very bad idea. Under different circumstances, I'm sure he would be more apt to try a three.

I think he could shoot it better than rafer. But if Yao is out shooting 3's he may aswell be a Point Centre
That was so funny...Miguel, moestavern19 and I were all sitting on the couch and when Yao faked that three, and we simultaneously jumped up and yelled, just waiting for it. Another time, another place. I also liked the simultaneous "NO NO NOOOO" when Rafer attempted that three in the final minutes. Man I love watching the game with those hombres.
hey, if the offensive flow allows for it, I say take it. Just more room for Tracy to get to the rack. And Francis, and Rafer, and james, everyone! On a side note, Rafer, shoot only layups or jumpshots. No floaters. Go in and get a foul or something instead, please.
