Hes a free agent this season and it seems like hes in high demand. Why? 1)Hes not the slasher he used to be but he definitely get to the hole if the defender plays off him enough 2)hes the son of Rick Barry, who loves Yao and definitely plays a pass first and shoot second attitude. 3)Barry is one of the more prominent 3 point shooters in the league. He can knock the open 3 which will come to him often while playing with a great passer such as Yao. 4)although Barry's defense is nothing to rave about, however, I am sure Van Gundy can rectify that. There are alot of teams that want Barry and I am pretty sure that he will cost atleast the MLE just to sign him.
The answer is yes. There are a few ways to get him. 1) Court him to sign as a free agent for the MCE. 2) Trade for him in a sign-and-trade, with Barry signing a new contract with the Sonics and the Rockets shipping them a player. Salaries should be within 15% of a match on the package of players. 3) Trade for him with the trade exception, or a part of it. ====================== I would think our offseason priority list is going to be : a) TMAC ( or other new star) b) forwards c) Barry So we will attack Barry with what's left after we take care of the first two things. Barry's a great complementary player, but not priority 1. You don't mess up another deal. He should wait through the summer to weigh his options, so there shouldn't be a rush.
I would think Nick Van Exel and Charlie Ward are more realistic than Barry. Barry is going to get a lot of interest so acquiring him will be difficult. Lucky for us, NVE and Ward want to play in Houston.
yeah, that's why Ward passed us over for SA. And where is this NVE as an option coming from? I know he's said he would like to play in Texas, but he still has one more year left on his contract. Unless he decides not to take the option on his contract(which I doubt is going to happen), NVE is not a realistic possibility with his bloated contract.
Ward passed on us for San Antonio only because he thought he would win a championship there. Plain and simple. And you just answered your own question in your own response about NVE. And i'm sure you have no basis for doubting him using his option and he hasn't commented on it yet, to know my knowledge. So as far as that goes, I can only think what makes the most sense for him. Golden State is going to be the worst team in the conference and he hates losing. So unless playing in California is enough to make up for that one rather important factor, i'd say it makes sense for him to move on.
Ward is a possibility, but I don't see Les's view on him changing so soon. I think there was an article on NVE and his option, he'd say it would be hard to walk away from the money. Ya, he said he would like to play for a Texas team, but he'd be walking away from a lot of money, a lot of money.
if we had already traded for tmac and upgraded our fowards, i think we could talk NVE into taking the starting job here.
Awhile ago ESPN Rumor Mill reported that Brent Barry was being courted by 5 or so teams -- the Rockets not being one of them. Seattle offered a 3 year deal for 18 million, which he declined. Barry is looking for a 4 year deal for the MLE, however it was reported that the sonics are still optimistic about re-signing him.
What do we want with NVE? He's only a year younger than Jimmy Jackson and hasn't been the answer with any of the teams he's played for. If we're going to bring in yet another old guy, let's at least find one who's a winner.
topfive: NVE was a big part of the mavs playoff run a couple of years ago. he can still get the job done. "old" players are very valuable, not in trade, but in winning games. this team could use as much vet leadership as we could find. if we get a couple more "old" guys, we might see our TO's go down and W total up.
No, I didn't answer my own question. You make an assumption tjat NVE is an option as a FA and the onus is on you to show something behind that besides speculation based off a flimsy article a couple of months old. Money is king in the NBA. There are very few exceptions over the last decade of a player choosing to leave substantial money on the table. Of the few exceptions(Malone, GP, Barkley), they were done out of desperation to get a ring, not to just simply "play in texas". And as far as Ward - dude is washed up. If you are looking for a hometown discount, go with Damon Jones.
My own personal favorite plays out as Mo T for Brent Barry in a sign and trade. Seattle gets a serviceable scoring forward and we get a guy they were going to lose. I don't think Mo will be in any other trade. ------- I'm looking at Steve and the TE and Spoon for TMac and Hill ; Cat and/or Cato for forward(s) - either Al Harrington and Croshere or a split deal with Donyell Marshall and Matt Harpring. Possibly even Kurt Thomas, if JVG wants to go for that. I get the feeling A.Houston is permanantly damaged and the Knicks need another 2 guard that can create his shot. ------- Mo has no value in either of those deals. They don't want him and his contract. He's what's left to get B.Barry. Seattle might also need some incentive to take on that contract - they might if we help them by taking back an overpaid center. We'll need a center after we trade Cato. The easiest contract to swallow would be Jerome James - and he's disgruntled in Seattle. If we can do James/Barry for Mo T and whatever (pike?); that's golden. We'd still have the MCE to use on a point like Arroyo, or split up for other needs. Possibly an expansion guy would be attractive. I'd also like to bring back Tmo - tall at the 3 and can play some fill in 4, a team player that passes the ball. If it all plays out we could go Yao/J.James Marshall/Tmo Harpring/Boki TMAC/JJ Barry/Arroyo or Yao/J.James Harrington/Tmo Croshere/Boki TMAC/JJ Barry/Arroyo Even possibly Yao/J.James K.Thomas/D.Marshall JJ/Boki/Tmo TMAC/Barry B.Barry/Arroyo Those teams are bigger and more dangerous than the team we have now. They shoot better, they move the ball better, they play tougher, they rebound better. TMac will destroy competition, Yao will play like a monster inside. It's the right combinantion - hot shooters, hard workers, ball movement surrounds the two stars. You can't double both of them - the supporting cast will kill you.
I know Seattle was courting MoT when he was leaving the Clips. However, he is now overpaid. I doubt Seattle would do that deal straight up; we would probably have to take Calvin Booth's salary off their hands in exchange for the TE to balance out the deal.
They also have Radmanovic who can score and Lewis, who they are reportedly looking to deal. I don't think they want another scoring forward on that team. As good as MoT is in the high post, they'd need him to pass out to the 3pt shooters on that team, and passing isn't his forte. I don't think Seattle would want Mo now.
can someone remind me again why Barry would make a good starting point guard? Has he ever been part of a team that played good defense? Individually what's his defense like??? If he is a good as rumoured (around here) then why even when he wasn't injured did Antonio Daniels beat him for the starting spot in Seattle??? He is how old again, and wants a 4 year deal.. his smarts on offense would be great... but this guy isn't getting any better.. if anything his game will start to decline in coming years..... 4 years is way too much for the money he is asking for... and why on earth would he come here anyway... he will go to a legitimate contender and try to get himself a title before he retires
