What the title says. Most of the offers for Odom have included the 1st pick, but would the Clippers accept maybe the 15th, 2nd rounder (48th or something), and a few players? Or would there have to be a third team involved to make salaries or talent match up correctly?
why do we want ming when we already have odem? odem just far better than ming will ever be. lost post presence just over rated, when you have super star like odem, you don't need anyone down there. odem can just take care everything.
Why would we listen to anyone who can't actually spell Odom. Odom gets you nowhere. 19% 3pt shooter, 65%FT, 3.3 TO, failed drug tests *5* times, injured twice. Whats not to like about Odom? Another genius Odom lover - that can't even spell his name and doesn't know the first thing about him. I'll take anybody over a problem like Lamar. Just imagine the jokes in the press about the Rocks with this lineup - Mo'Dope and Lamar Smok'em. Hey we could even replace Rudy T with John Lucas to make the team complete! Watchmen77 states 'low post presence is over rated'. - Tell that to Shaq and Hakeem.
Extremely unlikely that you will get Odom without giving up the #1 ... I cant see that you have anything that the Clippers need (and which you would be willing to give up) ... they sure dont need additional picks ...
The Clippers can get more for Odom than we can offer if we don't give up the #1. The Rockets are not going to move EG, Francis, and Mobley so that leaves #15 and KT that other teams would want. Not enough for Odom.
The more picks, the better. In this relatively deep draft, if you have 8, 12, 15 to trade to someone, it might get you someone pretty good. How about Moochie Norris, Kenny Thomas, the 15th pick and Houston's first-round pick in 2004 for Odom? It works cap-wise. They would have their backup point guard for the next few years, a crowd favorite and they would have a very dependable power forward to back up Brand (something they have been missing). I don't really care too much about the first-round pick in 2004, we can do more trades to get some picks from other teams. We could select a backup point guard with the 2nd round pick. My dream scenario would be Frank Williams, but I doubt he would still be there. Would also like Dickau, but the same goes for him. Anyway, we could always sign someone like Tierre Brown for something near the minimum, plus, with Francis, Mobley, Odom, you have three guys who can man the point anyway. PG Francis SG Mobley SF Odom PF Taylor C Ming Bench: Griffin (30 min. a game), Rice, Cato, Collier, Tierre Brown, Torres, plus some hard-nosed veteran. With Odom running the break and Francis and Mobley on the wing and Yao Ming in the middle, it's over .
One concern - and again, a question to the cap experts (aelliott, NIKEStrad, GATER, etc.) I have is: If we managed to pull it off to get Odom (AND Ming, of course, which is the only way I want Odom), when can we actually sign him to the extension he will want and can it work cap-wise?
SJR, so they are going to trade Odom to get KT and the 15(useless to them unless they move up)? And we can't trade that our pick unless we get rid of our Grizz obligation this year. What does that deal do for them really? How does it improve their team? Brand gets all of the pf minutes. They don't really need more rooks unless it's JWill. They'd be a better team if they just kept Odom and took best available at 8 and 12. They're not scrambling all over themselves to maker our team better ya know.
I would say that Odom + #8+#12 would bring something better ... the main benefit keeping Odom would be that if you trade you him he will be able to contribute right away to his new team and lets face it that is important to many teams ... especially if that team just traded a star ... You can't do that since you already owe us your 2003 pick ...
Wasn't there some article (on RealGM maybe) that concerned super agent Faulk wanting big bucks for all his clients (Brand, Maggette, Miles, Olowakandi). With Odom out of the way, his clients get more playing time, thus a bigger payoff. You know Faulk could force a trade for little (talent) compensation like that. Trades are so complicated now. You not only have to think on a talent level, but also on potential, chemistry, caproom, and agent levels.
I'm with SuperKev on this one. R. Lewis is a much better fit with much more upside (and a home town kid). I know getting him is a loooonng shot but hey weirder things have happened. And a low post presence is one of the things the rockets miss the most.
Odom is extra baggage for the Clippers right now. Whatever they get for him is Lagnappe because he was not much of a contributor last year anyway (appeared in only 29 games). A deal including this year's 15, thomas and another player or another pick somewhere might be doable. But, the Clips might get a little more help from another team. I do not think it is impossible, but cards would have to fall. As far as his stats...career 17pts, 7 rebs, 4.5 assists is very nice. Last year he was injured and had those "other issues". Bottomline, if we can get out of it not giving up this year's number, maybe a switch in spots, it would be a nice deal for the rox.
Actually, if the Clips had the #15, they might be able to deal with another team, say, Memphis, a team with (possible) interest in said draft picks. 8, 12, and 15 could get you the #4.
no one poses that another team is trying to help another team improve, but Odom does hold the cards and there is some sense to it. 1) Odom can walk next year and they get nothing 2) Odom has lost his position from all reports 3) Gaining another pick does allow them to deal to move up, as shown by NJ/Houston 4) KT would be valuable...former number 1 and 10/6 guy coming off the bench 5) Some sort of threeway would be in their interest 6) This is a deep draft. at 15, they can get a pure shooting swing guy to replace Piatkowski...the Husker Rifleman
We can offer Mooch, KT, Cato and the pick in any combination for Odom plus filler. If we can give the 15 to Memphis this year, then we can offer next years # 1 instead of the 15, if they prefer. That's about all we've got to give, except say, Oscar Torres. Clips likely ask for Griffin (or Francis), but Rox say no. The Griffin/Ming combination should be more valuable to rox than Ming/Odom. That one can be argued both ways, but the risk/reward ratio is better with Griffin than Odom. Griffins risk is that he does not get better. Odoms risk is that he gets worse. Griffin is the safer bet. I see Odom to Cavs for Miller. Depends on Cavs.
Lamar Odom can not walk next summer just like Olowokandi can't walk this summer. They both will be classified as Qualifying Offer FA's. The decision is in the hands of the Clippers not the players. IMHO, the whole Odom scenario boils down to a personal business decision by Donald Sterling. How much value does he place on Lamar Odom? Here are some factors which I feel will influence Sterlings decision: 1) The cost of keeping Olowokandi. Probably $7m to $9m. This sends a signal to Brand (also a QO FA next summer) that you are building the team around him (Brand) and that you will bid as high as necessary next summer to keep him on the Clipps. 2) The Clipps have won without Odom. Is Darius Miles the equivalent of Odom? Miles will not be a QO FA until summer of 2004. If they are close talent wise, why bid up the cost of Odom? 3) In addition to Kandi this summer, Brand, Odom and Maggette are ALL QO FA's next summer. There will be many teams next year with cap money and there are only so many Duncans and Jason Kidds to go around. If Duncan and Kidd take their player options with their current teams, Brand will surely be a commodity and the price will rise even further. Odom will also be in the remaining top tier of FA's. So how much will he bring on the open market? If Kid and Duncan re-sign and Brand (after Kandi this year) costs you alot of money, how much do you have left for Odom? Decision 1 - if I'm keeping Kandi and I'm keeping Brand, is it better to trade Odom this year or match bids on him next summer? Then the issue boils down to how much additional money Sterling wants to spend for a "running mate" for Brand. I personally don't have a read on this. Yes, Andre Miller is a possibility but Andre Miller is a QO FA next summer and subject to the same bidding process next summer that I mentioned earlier. Assume Kidd stays in NJ and the Clipps target Brand as the franchise...how much will Sterling want to pay for Miller? More than any other team? The Jazz love the guy and have a boatload of money to throw at him with Stockton and Malone off the payroll. Is Odom worth more than #15 and KT. Probably. Does that mean that Sterling woudn't try to find Brand's running mate with 8, 12, 15 or a trade up? No. My conclusion is that Sterling wants to win but not bad enough to overspend by his standards. I look for Odom to be traded but not for a vet or potentially high future contract.
It has been rumored that the Bulls may offer Jamal Crawford to the Rockets to keep us from drafting and trading their coveted future PG, Jay Williams. A deal involving KT, Crawford, and #15 may entice that dumbass Sterling to deal Odom our way. But chances are more than likely that the Clips won't deal their second best player for a couple of role players and a mid 1st-rounder.
big IF, but IF it were true I'm sure they could get a better return than simply KT and the 15th pick in the draft.
Also, don't forget the "...you wouldn't help us, why should we help you..." factor of human nature. Think about it, the Rocks say "No, you can't have the #1 to draft Ming, (Think about it, he allows them to let 'Kandi walk and keep Brand happy at the same time. And remember, Sterling is a businessman, the marketing possibilities must make him drool. A few years ago, the Clipps were a forgotten team, with Ming they could be an international phenomenon.) but how about BLAH BLAH BLAH for Odom...", what would you do if you were the Clipps? They (or anyone else for that matter) probably wouldn't deal out of spite alone. The deal is probably for the #1 or no deal at all, unless one of the Rockets' key players are part of the deal.
