How many clutch city members does it take to answer a question? It's a riddle(hint, hint)(not really)

    neko,
these guys are all on crack -- do NOT listen to them!

The numbers, as conceived by the great Red Auerbach in the late 1950's, refer to the specific number of tasks given to each player. The ideal team, in his eyes, had one player who took one main task seriously (1), another who took two main tasks seriously (2), et cetera. In this case, you'd need someone like Bill Sharman who could pass, shoot, dribble, rebound, and, um, steal the ball. John Stockton, for instance, would be a 4 if you use the scale properly. He can pass, shoot, dribble, and survive a game-long wedgie from his shorts.

Now, as the game has evolved, you usually have teams with a bunch of 1's or 2's, but due to really bad basketball announcers never understanding the true system, everyone thinks that every team has 1,2,3,4, and 5 now at all times! It's really sad, but there you have it. Let's look at the Rockets:

    Francis: he's a 4 -- dribble, shoot, rebound, turnover (but, sigh, he's called a 1)
    Mobley: he's a 2 -- dribble and shoot
    Posey: he's actually a 1 -- act hyper
    Griffin: he's a 2 -- rebound and block shots
Ming: a true 5 -- rebound, shoot, pass, block shots, and make commercials (so this is the only example where the backwards system of the idiots is actually correct).

    Glad I could help.

Wilt Chamberlain was the guy that originally blew that scale out of the water. On top of (no pun intended) scoring, rebounding, passing and blocking shots, he also had sex with 20,000 women. So his teams were usually comprised of 1-3s and then there was Wilt, who was a 20,004.

EDIT: I did make one mistake. ... Mobley, as a "2", also works in both the correct and incorrect systems.

RL, thanks for that extra input. I had forgotten about Wilt -- that's probably why the real meaning of the numbers was abandoned.
