Normally I support Hollinger's stuff but I can't figure out how this is possible. In his daily power rankings the Rockets have been 4th for awhile now so I went to look if we moved up following the win. We are still fourth but our rating went down!!! The Lakers; theirs went up somehow. I looked to see how it is factored. He doesn't say (from what I saw) how much every catogory gets weighed but a couple of the ones are:

SOS: average winning percentage of opponents played
SOS (L10): average winning percentage of opponents played over last 10 games
SOS (L25%): average winning percentage of opponents over last 25% of games played
Div: divisional rank; Conf: conference rank

So how the heck did our rating go down and Lakers went up (its slight but still makes no sense).

i really don't think they mean anything, i don't listen to them...i think it creates biases for people who don't know too much about the game and look at it to see who is doing well..

Most likely they have not updated overnight yet. Just wait until tomorrow morning and I'm sure you will be a lot happier.

Notice the records. They haven't been updated. Those rankings are still left over from yesterday. They usually go down a little on the days you don't play and those were update on our off day.

this obsession with stats for NBA ranking is ridiculous. it should serve as a secondary tool. not primary. to really understand the NBA, you have to watch games, and you have to watch scores every night. looking at the whole season to understand a team's current state is also foolish. the NBA is all about streaks and trends in ~5-day intervals.

He does weight recent performance more heavily.

I would expect the Rockets to move into 3rd place on Hollinger's rankings if they beat the Celtics on Tuesday, possibly second if the Pistons lose in the same time frame (or perhaps play a really weak team). I'm a fan of his rankings, actually ... I think for a formula that lacks the "human" element, it really does a remarkable job.

But for those who are really obsessed with rankings, don't worry ... you'll have your fill of #1s across the board today.

While your point is correct who on this thread is obsessed with his rankings. I'm the original poster and am no way obsessed with his rankings. I'll look at it about once every couple of weeks and decided last night to look at it since we had a big win,

The funny thing is I'm not too heavy on stats (i usually disregard them when it comes to comparing unless someone is avg like 11pts and someone else is avg like 22) but i've noticed that this particular ranking system is very good. No computer rankings or stats or perfect but they aren't subjective either.

This Hollinger power rankings is pretty good at showing who the better teams in the nba are. It goes mostly off of point differentials and recent wins but their are other factors. I think it is doing something many others aren't it shows that it is a fact that we are one of the best teams in the nba, not just because of some fluke or mishap in scheduling. I think we were still reasonably high in the rankings when we were below .500 because we had decent differentials and a tough schedule.
