I really dont want this to turn into an argument or have certain people label me as a "xenophobe", but what the hell is china's problem with the west? What have we done to have them dislike us so? I mean the spy plane incident was really much ado about nothing, I mean how does that compare to their theft of our weapons secrets? I realize that this is the wrong forum, but it is the only one that most people read so I am posing the question: what is their problem with us? I dont want to generalize but in my experience many asian cultures flock together excluding other races (the China towns in many major cities for example where the majority of the chinese live). Because of this phenomenon I think that a lot of people get rubbed the wrong way. Just to reiterate, I have no problems with Yao Ming or with China per se, I do have a problem with an attitude that can be percieved as condescending.
ha ha i like the part about this being the place that has the most posters. I did that before, i learned the hard way by getting flammed and having my threads relocated and locked. Aanyway, i have no idea why they are like that. I'm sure they say dtuff about the U.S that they don't like and want to know why we are the a holes. But it is true they(not everyone) are acting like ass holes by forcing us to bend rules and have all thses things like he must be number 1 pick and he can't be trade, and he must play on our team, and we need a player in return, and we get half of his money......Thats fuc*in mean wh yare they doing that. They need to just let him play if he wants, they are controling a grown man. Thats no fair. But no all countries ar elike us, some countries have less freedom than us.
Yeah, and you know all women care only about shoes, everyone from the south is an in-bred redneck and there's an oil well in every Texan's back yard. Oh, and dogs come from the planet Pluto and cheese is a vegetable. What is this, some quote from the giant book of stereotypes and myths about foreigners?
It is a stereotype what you're saying but at the same time I know where you're coming from. I think all races flock together to a certain extent. One thing that slightly bothers me though is that now many Asians will become Rocket fans solely based on the fact that we drafted Yao Ming, someone whom with they identify racially or nationally with. There is nothing tremendously wrong with that, but are those same people going to stick around as fans of the Rockets if Yao busts or has a career ending injury? BTW, this is just something I've thought about and not an attack on Asians or their culture.
The prevailing thought is that Clinton shared those weapons "secrets" to the Chinese. Theft had nothing to do with it. Oh and you just don't get it. Oh yeah...those Asians hate us so much that they do extensive trade with us (including importing US goods).
I'm not gonna label you or anything, just what a disservice to UT. Why Asians flock together, Americans rap, Chinese live in China town, Amish live in dutch town (FYI, all of the above statements have one thing in common) ? condescending hur?
Well, China is Communist, so the propoganda machine is running strong. I don't mean to offend the Chinese posters here, but your government has a history of corruption, deception, and lies, and they blind you. Not to say the US government is holy and pure, but the democratic competition here plus the Free Press kinda makes it more bearable on priciple. Many people will defend communists because they believed them (my mom still does today). Also, China got hard up the butt for a long time from Great Britain during the Great Humiliation era. But the reason they lost so bad in war was because they were technologically inferioir mainly due to the country's isolationist policies. So it's a combination of historical xenophobia, plus bad experiences with GB to justify it, plus the Communist government doesn't exactly promote the US as a wonderful friend. Not to say that everyone in China is that way...and not to say that people in the US aren't.... I'm just explaining the possible reasons why the people who are that way, are they way they are.
China's problem with us is the same as our problem with the old USSR (and the USSR's problem with us). A fear that a different way of life that the country disagrees with was going to spread across the world. As far as the spy plane incident, if we caught a Soviet or Chinese spy plane crash landing in the US, don't think for a second that we would just give it back. In terms of ethnic communities, that happens all over the world. You'll find pockets of Americans in foreign countries as well. It's exacerbated here a bit because many of these communities began when segregation was a still prevalent in the US. Many American communities throughout the world developed later, so you might not see as much of it, but I think you'll find that anywhere.
You know what? Screw you guys, I was attempting to ask a very serious question that I am trying to understand. Whether you want to believe it or not there is a lot of tension between our two government and I wanted to know the reasons for the chinese governments disdain for the united states. Excuse me for attempting to have an actual discussion about a sensitive issue, I thought that was one of the points for these forums......
Hey so do I. They just jump around through the cities over here but you have to be carefull or the Crocs will get them. Crickey!
Whites, Blacks, and Latinos generally flock together also. Only, they're neighborhoods aren't called ______town. I think the term Chinatown is strictly American. I think alot of Asians flock together because they're comfortable and familiar with each other. They're in a new world, and sometimes it's good to be amongst those you know. But, no race is excluded from Chinatown. Anyone can live there. You would be more comfortable living in Chinatown than I would be in many other neighborhoods. I don't think the HOuston Chinatowns have many residential areas though. Could be wrong.
It's hard to discuss seriously with you when you made those hilarious statements about other countries and countrymen. But, let me just say this: China has no problem with U.S. by and large, trade, cultural exchange all go pretty well. Chinese government is as cautious or has as much problem towards U.S. government as U.S. government towards Chinese government.....
HEY, KIM! If you graduated Austin HS in 99 and play the violin, then do you know who Carolyn Vandiver is? That was the orchestra teacher over there, right? If you know that one, then I know a few people from over there you should know, I graduated from Kempner in 99 and I was in their orchestra.
I don't think I see the animosity you are seeing. Certainly, there is tension, but, if you haven't noticed, almost every country in the world harbors some resentment of the US. China just follows that pattern. I'm actually impressed they are as friendly as they are considering we have such disdain for them. We're always giving them grief about human rights, democracy, piracy, Communism, free trade, Taiwan and everything else in which they differ from us. We've been criticizing their government for 50 years for being illegitimate tyrants. People and countries don't generally respond well when you criticize everything they do. And you can throw on for good measure all the exploitation the US and Europe had committed in China before the Communists took power. And yet, given all of that, they are testy but still restrained. I think a more interesting question would be, What is America's problem with China? Why do we dogmatically object to the government's every undertaking? As for the Chinatowns, I'll say my piece though it will only be a reiteration. If you go to rustbelt towns, you'll see the same phenomenon with many ethnicities. You'll find Polish neighborhoods, Puerto Rican, Jewish, etc., even gay neighborhoods. This is an element of human nature and not anything in particular to the Chinese. Don't you think if you went to live in a foreign country and didn't speak a lick of their language, you might be tempted to live within a cluster of fellow Americans with whom you could be friends, shop, work, and so on?
Hmmm... or maybe it makes good business sense to have Chinese restaurant right next to a Chinese grocery store, so that it's convenient for the potential customer. Kinda like having the coffee creamer in the same aisle as the Folgers. If you take out the culture from Chinatowns, you will see that they are nothing but just Malls. As far as exclusion, the last time I was down at Bellaire I don't recall any signs saying : "If you're not yellow, move on fellow". But that's no different than a bunch of Marylanders following the Rockets just because of Steve. How many of those fans would remain if Steve broke down?
