Compaq Presario AMD-K6 3D Processor Intel MMX Technology 128.0MB RAM My friend, who is not a very big computer user, just got DSL, but the machine runs a tad bit slow on it. He is wondering if it woudl be cheaper to upgrade the machine, rather than just buy a new one. What parts could be bought to upgrade this machine for under $500??
It would be MUCH more ideal to buy a new computer. You can get a much better system for under $500. Http://www.newegg.com http://www.compusa.com hell, tell him to go out and shop on Friday at places like Fry's or compusa. Compusa is having some crazy sales. a 2.8ghz (sadly celeron) pc for $99 for 1hr only (the deal). Or a nice Compaq for $199, AMD Sempron 64 3000+.
I'd buy a new machine. http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/oid...o/rpem/ccd/productDetailSpecification.do#tabs This was $250 a week ago and it included a printer (no monitor) That should around be your friend's ballpark if he's looking for a good deal. Since the motherboard is a generation away, the pieces to upgrade them are getting cheaper. PCI-Express isn't necessary for a servicable work/internet machine.
definently listen to everyone and just buy a new computer. The price of upgrading older computers has become more then the price of a new computer these days.
At my office, we give machines like that the "drag and drop" upgrade. Meaning we drag them up the stairs and drop them off the roof. You'll be much happier with a new machine. The best thing you can do for that machine is donate it to Goodwill, and use the write-off to help fund your new machine. Most Goodwill's will give you any receipt you want for a used computer, but I'd stick to original retail price if you anticipate an audit.
Anyone know any good sites that give a step by step guide to building a computer? Think I am going to look into doing it pretty soon, my computer at home is pretty much done for.
You can take a good look at a T-bone by sticking your head up a bull's ass, but wouldn't you rather take the butcher's word for it? Get a new computer...a refurb from Dell or something. Or, better yet, build your own cheapie from parts from newegg if so inclined and capable. You'll be better off.
I always go here before buying frrom Sites I don't know much about. http://www.resellerratings.com/ They have ratings for online stores. I just bought an Nvidia eVGA 6800 GT 256MB graphics card. Got it from https://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv , Wich I looked up on that ratings site. Cost me $312, but there is a $20 rebate. best price I could find for it online. Comes with free software too from teh store (not bundled with card). Somewhere, online the other day I found a page that has free video showing you how to install things such as the PS, chip onto MB, etc.
Assuming you use the old case + ps, mouse, kb + monitor. I shopped this out in newegg in a matter of minutes. This is a awesome budget pc.
There's no way you're going to be able to use even the case/PS from that old PC (Compaq - Computers Of Minimal Price And Quality). You've got to just start over. Check out this place if you want a local shop in Houston. Otherwise, just watch bens bargains, gottadeal, or Slick Deals for a good deal.
From a family man: erase everything on the old one, install a bare-bones family-friendly OS like Windows XP, buy it about 64 MB more memory, and give it to the kids for their games and homework or donate it to a school or church rather than keeping it stored for nothing. Get a newer one. Share the printer and Internet access via network if deciding to keep the other one, and you're set with your new one with bells and whistles. Gummi, does your friend know what the processor speed is and if it has anything else like CD writer or DVD player?
Speaking of which, I'm working at CompUSA for the summer! There's some kind of midnight madness sale going on tonight, the stores are open until 12 AM.
