Can draft picks only be seen as Star or Bust? Or can they fall in between too?

Star or Bust?

  1. Yes. If a lotto pick isn't an all-star in 3 years, then he should be out of the league

  2. All players have various odds of becoming superstar, star, solid starter, role player, or bust

Depends on people's expectations of them.

Alot of people have ridiculous expectations.

There are very few players regardless of drafting position that can develop into actual stars and superstars and with those rare players, everyone already knows they will succeed big in the NBA one day. There are also players that have a lot of potential, but never develop the mental fortitude or basketball intelligence to live up to their potential, IE Kwame Brown, Rasheed Wallace, Eddy Curry, ect.

theres probably 5 people in each draft who can be considered future all stars

for instance james harden was the 3rd pick by the thunder but i dont think anyones expecting him to be a star.

Pretty much depends on where in the draft they get selected.

Greg Oden would be a bust because he was #1 overall while having all the hype and potential on his side.

While Brooke Lopez is a potential star in the making being drafted at #10.

It really all depends on a lot of things but the most important is skill, as long as you've got an above average skill you'll be at the least a serviceable role player, e.i. Jordan Hill.

Shane Battier's a good example of someone who didn't surprise nor disappoint. He was who he was expected to be.

Depends of the expectations people have on the player, and the number pick of a player.

Depends on where they were drafted and who was passed up. They key is who was passed up. That's what teams never live down.

depends where hes drafted and his projected potential imo cuz some draft classes are weak and the top 10 are really not top 10 picks in a strong class, henceforth if a top 10 pick becomes a bust in a weak draft hes more of a victim due to lack of talent.. but if a guy becomes a bust in the top 10 thats a strong class then thats wat he is imo

prime example, last year draft class was relatively weak imo and Jordan Hill was picked 8th but I dont expect him to be a superstar but rather a potential good big, but I wouldnt call him a bust cuz the draft class wasnt all that great imo

IMHO its not whether a guy is a bust or a star, but whether he lived up to where he was picked, and the people taken after him. A guy picked first would obviously have a higher standard to live up than say the 36th pick.

The opposite terms aren't really bust or stars, but rather bust or steal...its just regarding lottery picks, being a steal means being a star so most people just use the terms interchangeably.

For example, Chuck Hayes is nowhere near a star, but I would say he was a steal because 2nd rounders don't usually amount to much. Regarding lottery picks though, especially those picked top 3, there really is just star or bust, and no in-between. If you end up getting a role-player for a top 3 pick then I would say you got a bust, even if the player is decent (i.e. Conley Jr.).

Obviously they fall in between. What was your real motive for this thread?

You really don't see it? When asked this question in isolation, people would give a very logical and sound response. Yet very few people actually think like this when discussing individual prospects themselves. People only see star potential or bust potential. And latter isn't even a clear statement.

It's gotten to the point where for some absurd reason, people talking about how Budinger and Lowry are "proven" while draft picks are not. Proven to do what? Be bench players? If you were to look at lottery picks taken by non-idiots(i.e. not drafted by MJ, Baylor, etc.), how many ends up being at least bench players? I'd say almost all of them. And most turn out to be solid starters at least.

So really, this poll is just out of curiosity of how people's logic gets warped when faced with prospects who may turn out to be all-stars or bench warmer. And never think about things in more detail. It also shows that people tend to take draft measurement at face value, rather than with a grain of salt that NFL fans already do.
